Official Darts Rules: How to Play Darts?

Darts is a game that anyone is able to play. It is likely the only sport in the world where players are permitted to consume alcoholic beverages prior to and during television breaks if the players wish to. Darts, is a game that originated in the United Kingdom and has since spread throughout the world. The goal of the game is to throw darts at a target and score a certain number of points faster than your opponent.

Equipment

To play darts, you will need two items: a dartboard and darts. The dartboard is a 45.1 cm circle with 20 separate segments. The board’s thickness should be 3.81 centimeters. The darts game continues with players selecting darts, each player can select darts of the weight that is most comfortable for them to throw. A single dart can have a maximum weight of 55 grams.

Hanging the Dartboard: Distances to Know

To begin, you must first determine the height at which the dartboard should be hung and the distance from which throws should be made. The dartboard is 173 cm high from the ground to the center of the board. Throws should be made from a distance of 237 cm or 293 cm, if draw a line from the center of the dartboard (diagonally).

Darts Rules

  1. Each player throws a dart at the target, and the player who hits the center first goes first. Both players in the game take turns throwing three darts to score the required number of points.
  2. The dartboard is divided into 20 segments, each worth 1 to 20 points. There are two circular rings in the center of the board, the outer ring is worth 25 points, and the inner ring is worth 50 points. The target has two additional rings – hitting the inner ring triples the points, hitting the outer ring doubles them.
  3. Points are calculated for a player after they’ve thrown all three darts. If a dart hits an existing dart on the board – no additional points are added. If a dart hits the target but bounces off without sticking – no points are awarded for that throw.
  4. Different Game Variations: “301 Game,” “501,” “701,” or increasing order game, where all accumulated points are added up and the winner is the one with the most points after 8 rounds (24 throws).

Games “301, 501, and 701”

These games are all the same, with the number in the name indicating the number of points you must ,,clear”. For example, if you’re playing 301, you must score that many points exactly, but the points are deducted in decreasing order. So you begin the game with 301 points and win when you reach 0. To complete the game, you must hit a double zone. For example, if you have 24 points remaining, you must hit a double 12. There is another way to finish the game besides hitting a double of the remaining points. To end the game, you should leave yourself with 50 points and then hit the ,,bullseye” which is located in the center of the target.

Other types of dart games follow the same rules. The most popular and officially used in world and European championships is the “501 game.”

Consider the following factors when putting up a dart target at home:

  1. Darts can bounce up to 3 meters away from the target, so consider whether there are any breakable or moving objects nearby.
  2. Recommended area for setting up: at least a 3.5 meters long and 2 meters wide space where it would be easy to pass and safe to avoid bouncing arrows.
  3. Since not all darts stick to the target, floors made of wood, plastic, or linoleum may develop holes. A hard surface, such as tiles or concrete, can cause the dart tips to break or blunt. Carpeting has its own issue, because the throw line is walked so frequently, quick wear is unavoidable.
  4. The best choice is a specialized rollout mat that protects both the floor and the darts.
