Grand National 2026 will traditionally be held in the first half of April at the Aintree Racecourse in Merseyside, near Liverpool. Carrying on over the course of the second weekend of April, it is an indispensable part of the British horse racing culture that attracts not only dedicated horse racing enthusiasts but the general public as well.

In this article we will take a closer look at the Grand National, break down its racecards, review the schedule, Grand National 2026 runners, and other key elements.

What Is the Grand National?

Held at one of Britain’s most well-known racecourses, the Aintree Racecourse, the Grand National Festival hosts 21 races, 7 races per each day of its duration. Each of them is a highly prestigious event and winning any of them would become a significant milestone in a horse’s racing career.

Standing out among them is the horse race that gave the name to the entire three days long event, the Grand National steeplechase. It is run over the distance of about 4 miles 2 1/2 furlongs (4 miles 550 yards; or 7 kilometres) and includes 30 fences to be jumped over two laps.

Not only is the number of fences in Grand National higher than in most chases, they are also much larger compared to usual National Hunt races. This is why Grand National earned the title of “the ultimate test of horse and rider”.

Below you will find some essential Grand National 2026 tips on every race of the event.

How to Read the Grand National Racecard

If you are looking for Grand National tips, one of the essential ones would be to study the race cards for the event.

Knowing how to read a Grand National racecard will help you make an informed decision if you are planning to bet on any of the Grand National races. And if you are just watching the race, you will have a better understanding of what is going on on the tracks.

Race time: You need to know the race starting time not only in order not to miss it, but also because it gives you an understanding of the timeframe in which the final runners and any possible non-runners will be declared.

Horse number: Before the start of the race, each participating horse is given an individual number. During the race you will also see it on the side of the horse. Keep in mind that it doesn’t reflect the horse’s odds or the probability to win. Instead, it is there to help you follow the horse during a fast paced race. Bettors also usually use numbers on bet slips when placing wagers.

Jockey: Of course, a horse’s physical form and training is the main factor that determines the outcome. But the leading hand of its jockey also plays a huge role. When you know which jockey will be riding the horse in the race, you can check their dynamics with the horse and at this particular race.

Trainer: The mastermind behind every racing team, the trainer prepares its charge for the upcoming competition. Check their historical performance and training style.

Weight: You will find weight next to the horse’s name. It is given in stones and pounds (for example, 9-7, i.e. 9 stones and 7 pounds). This includes the saddle, equipment and all the additional weight the horse is required to carry in the race. This information is important for punters because it helps them understand how a horse will perform in different ground conditions, how well it can accelerate, and how it will run a long distance.

Official rating: Official rating (OR) has nothing to do with the horse’s odds or potential to win. Rather, it is more of an evaluation of its past performances that can change depending on the latest performance: increase in case of outstanding results, decrease after a poor performance, or stay the same if the horse performed as expected. Official rating directly determines how much additional weight a horse will carry in a handicap race. Horses with higher OR are assigned more weight in correlation 1 OR point equals to 1 pound.

Form figures: This is a short overview of how a horse performed in the recent races. Arranged from the oldest to the latest, each number represents the place the horse took in a race. Anything below the 10th place is shown as 0, a dash “-” means a break, and letters correspond to other possible results like “fell” or “unseated rider”. This information helps bettors make up their mind if they want to back this particular horse in the upcoming race.
