Cheltenham Thursday Odds
Bookmakers assign Cheltenham Day 3 odds to each horse based on their probability of winning the race. Horses with a strong physical form and recent wins may be considered favourites in a race. For these horses, you will find “short” odds, meaning bets on them return a low profit. On the other hand, bookmakers give inexperienced horses “long” odds, as they have a long shot of winning. Bets on these horses pay more but are considered risky.
Note that the prices are dynamic. They can shift frequently in the days and hours leading up to the race. Odds for Cheltenham Thursday betting depend on several factors, such as runners’ physical form and ground conditions. If a horse is declared a non-runner, it shifts the odds for the entire racecard. Similarly, if a trainer withdraws the horse due to ground conditions, the odds may change.
So, before placing your wagers, research factors like recent results, trainer comments, ground conditions, and confirmed entries.

The Win market is straightforward: predict which horse will cross the line first in each race. If the horse wins, the bet pays out according to the Cheltenham Day 3 odds provided by the bookmaker. For example, if a horse is priced at 10/1, it means a successful bet returns £10 for every pound. Your original stake is also returned.
The favourite is typically the runner with the lowest price. However, be on the lookout for injuries and ground conditions before the race.
Cheltenham Day 3 Forecast & Tricast Odds
In a forecast bet, punters have to predict the first two finishers in the correct order. This means you need two outcomes to be right for your bet to pay out. For example, you predict Horse A will be 1st and Horse B will be second. If the order is reversed or if only one horse places, the bet loses. Your potential payout is much higher in this market because of the risk.
A ‘Reverse Forecast’ bet is a safer version of this market. Here, you can predict that both horses will finish in the top two, irrespective of who comes first. Both finishing combinations win in this market. Take this bet only if you are confident about the best two horses in a race.
A Tricast bet goes one step further. In a tricast, you have to select the first three horses in the exact finishing order. It is yet another risky market, which gives long odds. Check the horses’ ratings and previous wins before taking this bet. If it’s a competitive field, you can take the Tricast as a side bet. Cautious bettors should avoid this market.
Popular Cheltenham Thursday Betting Markets
Here are some more markets to consider for the Cheltenham festival:
Each-Way Betting
This Cheltenham Day 3 betting market combines two wagers:
- A win bet on the horse
- A place bet on the horse finishing within a set place
For example, a race with 20 runners might have five place bets. So, you can bet that your runner will win or finish in the top five. Let’s say you want to bet on a previous winner, but are not sure it will win. Take the each-way bet. A £40 bet will be divided £20 on the win and £20 on the place. If the horse wins the race, both parts of the bet are successful. If it finishes in the top five, but doesn’t win, only the Place part of your bet pays out.
The odds for Place bets are calculated as a fraction of the win odds (commonly 1/5 or 1/4). So, if the win odds are 10/1 and the place terms are 1/5, your £20 bet will pay £40 at 2/1 odds.
Take the each-way bet if the field is competitive with more than one past winner.
Match Bets
In a Match Bet, you need to focus on only two horses. Predict how they will match up against each other and who will finish the race ahead of the other. It’s a safer horse racing betting market for cautious bettors, as you don’t have to predict the winner.
Non-Runner No Bet
If your selected horse is declared a non-runner on race day, your stake is refunded in this market. This can be a useful bet on horses that are entering multiple races at the Festival. Trainers may decide to rest or withdraw their horse a day before the final confirmation.
Betting is only available to participants aged 18 years and over. Please bet responsibly. BeGambleAware.org
