ICC Women’s T20 World Cup: Bangladesh vs England

Bangladesh will be up against England in the fifth match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday, October 5, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium (available on live streaming). It will be the second game of the tournament for Bangladesh, and the first outing for England.

Bangladesh won the first match of the tournament against Scotland. They elected to bat after winning the toss, finishing with 119 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Sobhana made 36 runs off 38 deliveries, while Shathi played a knock of 32-ball 29.

The Bangladesh bowlers had a good day in the middle. They took three wickets and gave away just 49 runs in the first 10 overs. The Scottish batters could hit only four boundaries in this duration with a tight fielding position from Bangladesh. Scotland’s wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce held on to one end and kept on piling runs.

Scotland made 103 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs and lost the match by 16 runs. Sarah was the only batter who crossed the 20-run mark for Scotland. Ritu Moni was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh and took two wickets for 15 runs in four overs. Marufa Akter, Nahida Akter, Fahima Khatun, and Rabeya Khan took one wicket each. Moni won the Player of the Match award for her bowling performance.

This win ended their drought of 16 back to back losses in the T20s. Bangladesh last won a match in the T20 internationals on April 3, 2014, against Ireland.

England last played a three-match T20 series against Pakistan in May this year. They won all the three matches of the series.

Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Team: Analysis and Preview

Bangladesh announced their 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup last month. Nigar Sultana was appointed to lead the side. Against Scotland, Sultana became the first-ever Bangladesh player to feature in 100 T20 matches.

Since 2022, Sultana has made 1104 runs in 48 T20I games at an average of 30.66. All of her eight half-centuries have come during this period.

Bangladesh have arrived in the UAE with a spin heavy bowling attack. Their success in this edition of the World Cup will be dependent on spin bowling attack of Nahida Akter, Shorna Akter, Rabeya Khan, Sultana Khatun and Fahima Khatun. Marufa Akter, Jahanara Alam, Ritu Moni and Sobhana Mostary are the pacers in the team.

Rabeya Khan is the leading wicket-taker for Bangladesh in international T20s this year with 13 wickets to her name in eight outings. She is the only Bangladeshi bowler among the top 10 in ICC Rankings as of September 30.

England Women’s Cricket Team: Analysis and Team Preview

England were the inaugural winner of the T20 World Cup in 2009. Since then, they have managed to reach the final of the tournament on three occasions but fell short against Australia each time.

Heather Knight will lead the English side in this edition of the World Cup. Bess Heath, Danielle Gibson and Freya Kemp have been picked for a T20 World Cup squad for the first time. Gibson travelled with the team as a reserve during the last edition of the World Cup.

Out of the 15 players picked for the World Cup this year, 12 were a part of the English side last year in 2023. The three players who have been overlooked are Lauren Winfield-Hill, Kate Cross and Katherine Sciver-Brunt (retired).

Sophie Ecclestone was the leading wicket-taker durin the last edition of the tournament. She is the second-highest wicket-taker for England in T20 internationals this year and has taken 13 wickets at an average of 12.46 in eight matches. She is also the number one ranked bowler in ICC Rankings.

Maia Bouchier and skipper Knight will be the opening batters. They are the only batters who have scored more than 300 runs in T20 internationals this year for the English women’s cricket team.
