Formula 1 2025 British GP Preview

Slowly but surely, the Papaya Boys are pulling away from Max Verstappen in the Driver standings. Of course, the 4-time world champion won’t go down without a fight, and with the Silverstone track ready for action, anything is possible after the lights go out. Ferrari fans are hopeful for a Leclerc or Hamilton podium, as the 7-time World Champion (WC) seeks to extend his colossal streak of finishing in the TOP 3 at Silverstone for the last 11 years.

However, things aren’t going to be easy, as the British tarmac requires both a smart car setup and daring overtakes. So, get your popcorn ready for July 6, as the 2025 British Grand Prix could be a classic. Check out the F1 odds before this weekend and learn the main storylines before the race right here!

3 Biggest Storylines Before the British GP

Lando v Oscar |A Classic Battle is Brewing

Thanks to Verstappen’s first-lap retirement in the Red Bull Ring (courtesy of Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli), both McLarens extended their lead over the Dutchman in the Driver’s standings. The first part of the race was a proper tussle between the two. Even with the tough challenge, Norris held on to take the chequered flag.

As things stand before the 2025 British GP, Piastri holds a 15-point advantage over his teammate and main title rival. The Aussie has been a more consistent driver, but his lead is still a fragile one.

After his solid win in Monaco, Lando Norris seems more consistent and ready to take the fight until the bitter end. Ignoring the woeful error in Canada, leading to his DNF, he has finished 1st or 2nd 5 times in a row.

On the other hand, Piastri seems to have cooled down a bit. He won in Spain, but didn’t extend his lead over Lando all that much. While McLaren remains the obvious fastest overall car, the Papaya Boys do face significant threats on a track-by-track basis.

Silverstone promises to be a favourable venue for them, with only Ferrari’s duo and Max Verstappen being two visible threats for pole and podium spots. Let’s see whether the battle can continue in full swing, as things will get even spicier with every GP.

Red Bull Patience Wearing Thin

When Liam Lawson started the season super slow, Red Bull axed him pretty quickly. With the talented Yuki Tusonda stepping up in place of the Kiwi, everyone expected him to finish in the points consistently. However, the Japanese driver has had a campaign that can only be labelled as dismal so far.

After a dreary P16 finish in Austria, highlighted by a collision penalty, Red Bull’s patience is wearing thin. While Verstappen is constantly challenging for podiums and race wins, Tsunoda struggles to get out of Q1.

Red Bull’s second car often lags behind its sister team, with Verstappen’s DNF in Austria further spotlighting the gap in performance. Even in healthy races, Yuki hasn’t been able to drive as well as he did in the RB seat.

Poor form of the Japanese driver has already sparked discussions about yet another driver change, possibly swapping Tsunoda with rookie sensation Isack Hadjar for the remainder of 2025.

Both team principal Christian Horner and Helmut Marko indicated that Yuki’s results aren’t acceptable. If he isn’t able to turn things around in the next few weekends, Red Bull could fall out of the fight for the top 3 in the Constructors standings. With his seat in clear risk, can Yuki improve? That remains to be seen.

What’s up with Kick Sauber?

In the first 8 races of the 2025 season, Kick Sauber only managed a meagre 6 points. However, the race in Barcelona marked a miraculous turnaround. Nico Hulkenberg overtook Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton on track to finish P5, and Sauber more than tripled their total points tally in the past 3 races.

The reason for the improvement is a major upgrade package, which includes a revised floor, sidepod airflow, cooling, and even a new front wing. The double-points finish in the Red Bull Ring may indicate that the future Audi Factory team means business.

After solving the car’s peaky behaviour in turbulent air, Sauber now seems like the 5th or 6th fastest car on track. It’s nice to see the team’s hard work pay off and turn the obviously slowest car into a genuine midfield contender in a few months.

British GP | Track & History

Silverstone is on par with Monaco, Spa and Monza as the most storied tracks on the F1 calendar. From the infamous 2021 Verstappen-Hamilton crash to Hamilton’s wet-race masterclass in 2008, ‘Home of British Motorsport’ has delivered so many classic moments that it’s hard to count.

The 3.661-mile circuit blends abrasive tarmac with flowing corners and long straights, offering a genuine challenge for teams and drivers alike. It’s a venue where legends are made, and heartbreak hurts 2x as much.

Originally a RAF airfield, Silverstone hosts iconic Maggots & Becketts corners – a sequence that’s loved by probably every driver on the grid. A handful of DRS zones create plenty of opportunities for overtaking and hard wheel-to-wheel racing. Verstappen’s and Leclerc’s battle in 2019, and Perez v Leclerc v Hamilton in 2022 are prime examples of what this track can deliver.

As the 80th British GP awaits, Lewis Hamilton will seek to extend his historic dominance (9 wins), with Max Verstappen and both McLaren’s vying for the win, too.

Recap of the Last Racing Weekend | Austrian GP

After a dominant quali performance, Lando Norris remained in the lead after turn 1 and held off Oscar Piastri’s charge to claim the race win.

Surprises were most plentiful in qualifying as Max Verstappen was out-qualified by RB’s Liam Lawson, settling for 7th. However, the worst was yet to come for the Dutchman. He was taken out on the first lap, courtesy of Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli.

Besides Red Bull, Williams were also big losers with Carlos Sainz facing a mechanical issue and retiring before the start. Alex Albon was driving very well, but also had to retire.

The biggest surprise was Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, who reached Q3 and finished 8th, claiming double points for the team, as Nico Hulkenberg crossed the flag right behind his Brazilian teammate.

Ferrari also did well as Charles Leclerc took 3rd and Lewis Hamilton ended 4th, securing a solid points haul for the Scuderia. George Russell rounded out the TOP 5.
