The Win betting market in horse racing works similarly to other straight win markets in sports betting. As a bettor, you are placing your wager on the outcome of the competition. One big difference it has compared to team sports is that team sports can only have two or sometimes three possible outcomes (if a draw is allowed by the rules). Technically, there can be as many outcomes in horse racing as there are horses in the race.
If you are placing a wager on the win market, you are backing a horse that in your opinion has the best chances to finish the race first. If your prediction turns out to be correct, you will get a payout proportional to the offered odds and your stake. Understanding and following the win market is rather simple, that’s why it is recommended to beginner punters but is equally attractive for experienced bettors.

Forecast and tricast betting markets are also very popular in horse betting in general and the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in particular. While their main focus is also on the outcome of the race, the betting mechanism involved works differently.
A wager you place on a forecast betting market includes not one but two horses. You are trying to predict which two horses will take the first and the second place in the race. When betting on a straight forecast, if you stated in your bet that horse A will be the first to come to the finish line and horse B will be the second, they need to finish the race in this particular order, otherwise your bet will be lost.
The reverse forecast allows a bit more flexibility. Even if the horses you selected come to the finish line in the reverse order, i.e. horse B is the first and horse A is the second, your bet still wins.
The mechanism behind the tricast market repeats the same model but instead of defining the finishing order for two horses you do the same for three. Same as with the forecast bet, in straight tricast, all three horses have to come to the finish line in the order you specified, otherwise you will lose your bet. For combination tricast, as long as all three finish the race in the top three, any combination will work in your favour.
If any of the horses you chose for your bet falls behind and doesn’t make it into the top two (forecast bet) or top three (tricast bet), you will lose your wager.
Both these bets involve higher risks because the outcome depends on the performance of either two or three horses instead of one. That’s why it is quite common to find higher odds on these markets, which means if you make the right prediction, you will have a higher payout.
Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Odds
For the events of such magnitude and importance in the horse racing calendar like the Cheltenham Festival, odds on most of its races are announced as early as the initial runners become known.
Runners for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle were declared on 20 January 2026, and while some bookmaking platforms would offer Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting odds on the race from day one, it is important for bettors to remember that horse racing odds have a tendency to change a lot prior to the start of the race. So what may have seemed like a good bet early on, may significantly lose its value later.
This is not to say that ante-post betting in horse racing should be completely avoided but it is better suited for experienced punters who know when an early bet is warranted.
Three most important factors that influence the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle odds fluctuation are the following:
- Horse’s physical form and performance. Since the start of the season, horse racing enthusiasts, bettors, and bookmaking platforms follow the performance of all promising horses in other large races preceding the Cheltenham Festival, especially if the horse has the potential of being declared a Cheltenham runner. Every win or loss counts towards the odds offered on the horse.
- Non-runners. If a horse is declared a non-runner on the morning of the race or before that, it will affect the odds offered on other horses. It can also impact the number of paid placements, which plays a big role in several bets.
- Ground and weather conditions. Ground conditions are very important for the horse’s performance on the track. They tend to change frequently, so bettors are advised to see the final announcement.
Same as other types of sports betting, horse racing offers a wide range of betting markets. However, the most popular ones that also have an easy mechanism are the Win, Forecast, and Tricast markets. Let’s take a look at how they work if you are placing a wager on Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Popular Supreme Novices’ Betting Markets
Other Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting markets that are available include:
Each Way Betting
When placing a bet on this horse racing market you are getting a 2 in 1 deal of sorts. You are placing two stakes on the same horse. One is for the horse to come to the finish line first, the other one is for the same horse to be placed in the race. Of course, your stake will double, but each way betting provides value for that.
Now if your horse does win the race, you will get a double payout, one for the win and one for the placement. If the horse isn’t the first to finish but still takes a winning position, you will lose your win wager but will get a payout on your placement wager. The number of winning places is defined depending on the number of runners entering the race.
Match Bets
This Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting market isn’t focused on the outcome of the race but rather the results two horses show in relation to each other. Here you choose two horses from the list of runners and place a bet on which of them will finish the race in a higher position than the other. The important part to remember is that while either of them may win the race or be placed, they don’t have to for this bet to work. All that is taken into account is their positions in relation to each other.
Non-Runner No Bet (NRNB)
For large scale events like the Cheltenham Festival, all official selections are declared within 48 hours before the start of each race. After that, trainers get a window to announce any non-runners on the morning of the race. If you had placed your bet on a horse after the official declarations, you will get your stake back if it is announced as a non-runner later.
However, in standard ante-post betting a wager placed on a non-runner is lost. Bookmakers often announce the non-runner no bet promotion to provide a level of insurance for early bets and encourage punters to bet early.
Betting is only available to participants aged 18 years and over. Please bet responsibly. BeGambleAware.org
