The month of June in the British flat horse racing calendar is always centred around the biggest event of the season, the Royal Ascot. This year it will take place between Tuesday, 16 June and Saturday, 20 June at its historic venue of Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England. St James’s Palace Stakes is one of the races to be conducted on the first day of the meeting. It also headlines the day’s race card.
The St James’s Palace Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race that accepts three year old colts. It is run over a distance of about 7 furlongs and 213 yards (1,603 metres). Introduced in 1834, St James’s Palace Stakes often features runners who have previously participated in such prestigious races as 2,000 Guineas, the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (the French equivalent of the British 2,000 Guineas), or the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
When the current system of race grading was introduced in 1971, St James’s Palace Stakes received the status of Group 2. About a decade later, in 1988 it was promoted to the Group 1 level. An interesting fact in the race’s history is that chestnut stallion Plenipotentiary won the inaugural race on a walkover.
In this article we will take a look at this year’s runners declared to participate in the race, review the race card for the day, and discuss some of the most interesting runners that are either favoured for the win or attract attention of both experts and the general public.

Participating in Royal Ascot early on in your racing career is an achievement in and of itself. Every year some of the best up and coming racing stars are entered into the St James’s Palace Stakes. Who to Look Out for at St James’s Palace Stakes 2026
Since its inaugural run, St James’s Palace Stakes has produced a number of outstanding winners who would go on to have remarkable racing careers. With the age restriction set to accept only three year olds, every colt can only run in this race once. For this reason, there are no records of multiple winners of the champion title.
The latest winner in 2025 was a grey colt Field Of Gold. This was his third win of the season out of six races he took part in, with the two previous wins including bet365 Craven Stakes at Newmarket (April 2025) and Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas in Curragh (May 2025). Field Of Gold was trained by John and Thady Gosden and led on the track by jockey Colin Keane.
Bow Echo
- Age: 3 years old
- Sex and colour: bay colt
- Trainer: George Boughey
- Major achievements: 4 out of 4 wins, including 2,000 Guineas Stakes (May 2026)
Many bookmakers and horse racing experts unanimously name Bow Echo as the undisputed favourite of the race. Since his first race, George Boughey’s charge hasn’t lost a single start.
In his debut season of 2025 Bow Echo came to the finish line three times out of three races he took part in. He started 2026 with an impressive win in the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, the headline feature of the Guineas Festival, where he was led on the track by jockey Billy Loughnane.
Gstaad
- Age: 3 years old
- Sex and colour: bay colt
- Trainer: Adrian O’Brien
- Major achievements: 3 out of 7 wins, including Irish 2,000 Guineas (May 2026)
Gstaad is not a complete stranger to the Ascot Racecourse. During last year’s Royal Ascot, he won Coventry Stakes together with jockey Roger Moore.
One of the renowned Adrian O’Brien’s eight charges at this year’s race, Gstaad opened this season with a second place in the 2,000 Guineas Stakes at the Guineas Festival, falling behind Bow Echo. He went on to win the Irish 2,000 Guineas shortly afterwards. Having never finished a race lower than in second place, Gstaad is considered as a major challenger for the champion title.
Talk Of New York
- Age: 3 years old
- Sex and colour: bay colt
- Trainer: Charlie Appleby
- Major achievements: 3 out of 4 wins, including Star Sports Heron Stakes (May 2026)
Talk of New York became part of the Royal Ascot conversation after his impressive win in the Star Sports Heron Stakes at Sandown Park Racecourse at the end of May 2026 where he was led on the track by William Buick.
Right now, experts don’t see him as a direct challenge for Bow Echo and Gstaad, as many agree he still has to find his footing. However, they also agree that Charlie Appleby’s charge has all the potential to at least stir the race and have his chance.
Puerto Rico
- Age: 3 years old
- Sex and colour: bay colt
- Trainer: Adrian O’Brien
- Major achievements: 3 out of 9 wins, including Criterium International (October 2025)
After his impressive back to back wins at the end of last season, including two of them in French races, Puerto Rico caught the attention of horse racing experts and bookmakers alike.
Another one of Adrian O’Brien’s charges to enter the race this year, Puerto Rico started the 2026 season with a fourth place in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains at the Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, France, where he was led on the track by jockey Roger Moore. This race is the French equivalent of the 2,000 Guineas race in Britain. Most experts translate Puerto Rico’s previous runs as an interesting alternative to watch on the track.
Rayif
- Age: 3 years old
- Sex and colour: chestnut colt
- Trainer: Francis Henri Graffard
- Major achievements: 3 out of 4 wins, including Poule d’Essai des Poulains (May 2026)
Travelling to Royal Ascot from France, Rayif counts three wins to his credit. The latest and most impressive one took place in May 2026 when he came first to the finish line and became the champion of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains race, the French counterpart of the British 2,000 Guineas race. He was led on the tracks by jockey Mickael Barzalona.
While Rayif has not been in direct spotlight for Royal Ascot in general and St James’s Palace Stakes in particular, his trainer Francis Henri Graffard admitted that he was happy with the underdog status as he and his charge are getting ready to take on the challenge against the race’s favourites.
