How Long Is a Baseball Game? By League & Level

If you have seen the 1999 movie Blast From the Past, you will remember a scene where the main character Adam keeps failing to understand baseball… even after having been watching the game for a couple decades.

We have to admit, if you are not a fan of baseball, it can be a bit difficult to understand. Even the runtime that varies significantly depending on what game you are watching can be confusing for newbies.

In this article we will take a look at all the circumstances that define the length of a baseball match and answer the burning question: “How long is a baseball game?”

How Long Is a Baseball Game?

If you are looking for a quick and easy answer, an average baseball game length in Major League Baseball is approximately 3 hours. However, the main thing about baseball is that unlike many other games, like football or basketball, it doesn’t have a defined period of time during which two competing teams have to outplay each other.

A game of baseball consists of innings that are divided into top (first) and bottom (second) halves. Teams swap places between batting and scoring runs and playing in defense. Each half lasts until the batting team has three outs.

But even that is not all. The number of innings, and correspondingly, the length of the game will vary depending on which league you are watching. Circumstances such as a tie, extreme weather conditions, and the so called “mercy rule” can also have their impact on the length of a baseball game.

Another defining factor for the baseball game length are the new trends and rules. One of the most prominent ones is the pitch clock for MLB. Introduced in 2023, it imposes time limits on how long pitchers and batters can take to get ready for the next move.

Average Game Length by League and Level

League Average Duration
Major League Baseball (MLB) ~2.5 to 3 hours
Minor League Baseball ~2.5 hours
College Baseball ~2 to 2.5 hours
High School Baseball ~1.5 to 2.5 hours
Little League & Youth Baseball ~1 hour 45 minutes
Tee Ball and Intro Levels ~1 hour

Major League Baseball (MLB)

A regular game in Major League Baseball consists of nine innings. During each inning both teams get their chance to bat and score runs, while the other team plays in defence. The length of a single inning will greatly depend on how productive both teams are and what strategic decisions they make.

If after completing nine innings one team is leading the score, the game ends. However, if there is a tie, extra innings will be added to the match because baseball is one of those games that can’t end in a tie. Extra innings aren’t limited in number and will continue until one team has a clear advantage.

So if you are wondering, how long is an MLB game, in the 2024 season a standard baseball game in Major League Baseball averaged at 2 hours 36 minutes. This is a significant change from an average of 3 hours 3 minutes in 2022 before the pitch clock was introduced.

Still, not every game will clock in at 2:36. Factors that can influence its duration are pitching changes, mound visits, and even commercial breaks (that were actually also shortened). We will take a closer look at these factors later in the article.

Minor League Baseball

But how long does a baseball game last in Minor League Baseball? While a typical game in the Minor League has a similar structure and approximately the same length as the Major League Baseball, it is usually slightly faster as the commercial breaks tend to be shorter and some leagues experiment with new rules.

Officially, a match will still consist of nine innings, but it is more common for Minor League Baseball to have seven inning matches. This is especially true in case of doubleheaders, i.e. two games between the same two teams played on the same day, often in succession.

So generally, a Minor League Baseball match would also last approximately 2.5 hours but there is a bigger chance that it will be somewhat shorter than an average Major League Baseball match.

College Baseball

When it comes to college baseball, the duration of the match is similarly influenced by various factors. Typically, college baseball follows the same rules and formats as Major League and Minor League Baseball.

This means that a match of college baseball will normally have nine innings and last approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. However, it is more common for some college baseball tournaments to apply mercy rules and play only seven innings per game. Of course, this significantly reduces the total runtime.

High School Baseball

High school baseball is where the standard number of innings officially changes. When played at high school, a baseball match normally consists of seven innings. The game can become even shorter if mercy rules are applied.

This happens in standard situations like when one of the teams has a significant advantage in scored runs, normally after the fifth inning. In this case the game will last five or six innings. High school baseball games tend to have fewer delays than professional baseball. This is another factor that affects the length of the game.

Since the pitch clock rule was introduced, the average length of an inning became 16 to 18 minutes. This means that a game of high school baseball typically lasts between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, with the shorter duration being more likely.

Little League & Youth Baseball

Professional baseball is as much about athletic prowess as it is about psychological warfare on your opponents (which, unsurprisingly, adds to the runtime). For the young athletes of the Little League things are easier in this regard, and their games tend to be much shorter.

Little League is divided into several divisions based on the players’ age. Here we will look at the older divisions.

A typical match in Little League lasts for 6 innings. Apart from common factors that influence the duration of a baseball game, like extra innings, pitching changes, and others, the age of the players is also taken into consideration.

Circumstances that call for mercy rule application, for example, extreme weather or a significant advantage in runs, work the same way in the Little League. They can be engaged from the fourth inning onwards.

Some leagues take into account the shorter attention span players have at this age and impose a definite runtime, usually an hour and 45 minutes. After this period is out, a new inning can’t begin, and the game is over.

Tee Ball and Intro Levels

Tee Ball is for the youngest baseball enthusiasts, typically between 4 and 7 years old. At this stage any game is aimed at developing their skills rather than staging a full competition. And while all the game rules still apply, the time limits work differently.

A match in Tee Ball lasts for 3 innings or one hour, whichever comes first. A half inning will end when the batting team has reached 3 outs or if all the players have batted. A nice age appropriate touch here is that there is no official score. Coaches are more focused on giving instructions and helping the players grow.

What Affects Game Duration?

As we mentioned before, outside of the factors directly related to the game, like how long it takes the batting team to get three outs, there are a number of other factors that prolong or shorten a baseball match, even if they are played at the same level.

  • Extra innings: Extra innings are assigned when a game ends in a tie. Baseball rules don’t allow for a tie, so extra innings will be added until one team gains an advantage. Their number is not limited, so theoretically they can prolong the game indefinitely.
  • Number of pitching changes: Pitching change refers to replacement of one pitcher with another during the match. It works like any other replacement in different sports and brings in fresh power on to the field. While there are certain rules as to when teams are allowed to do this, pitching changes are unlimited in number, each one adding to the clock.
  • Weather delays: As baseball is played in an open field, extreme weather conditions can affect the gameplay. While Major League teams usually continue playing in light or moderate rain, heavy rain may make it impossible to play. If the field is made unfit to play (for example, standing water), the game will also be cancelled or postponed. Other unfavourable weather conditions are also taken into consideration.
  • Game pace: A lot of in-game factors also affect the runtime. Things like number of walks, hits, how quickly a team gets three outs and others mostly depend on the skills and efficiency of the players and can either prolong or shorten the game.
  • Pitch clock: Pitch clock was introduced in 2023 in order to put a limit on the time a pitcher has before throwing the ball or the hitter has to get ready for the hit. Currently, the pitch clock imposes the following limits: pitchers have 15 seconds with the bases empty and 18 seconds with at least one runner on base; batters are obliged to be in the batter’s box and ready to hit by the 8 second mark.
  • Mound visit limits: Mound visit is the coach or the manager coming to the mound to give the pitcher some advice, encouragement, or discuss strategy. The first mound visit during an inning is penalty free but after the second one the coach is obliged to change the pitcher. While such visits are useful for the team, they also add to the runtime. After the 2016 season the duration of a single visit was limited to 30 seconds. Since the 2018 season the number of visits had also been gradually reducing to cut down the runtime. The 2024 season began with four visits per nine innings allowed.
