About the Teams in EuroBasket 2025

All 24 EuroBasket teams will be divided into four groups of six teams. The top 4 teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, which will take place in Riga.

Returning Champions & Early Favourites

Fans will be able to see 24 strongest national squads in all of Europe go head-to-head.

Spain arrives as defending champions, but will have their work cut out for them early on as they got drawn into the Group of Death – C. Early on, the Spanish side will face a dangerous Greece squad, a streaky Italian team and a Bosnian national selection with tremendous upside.

World champions Germany is in Group B, where Lithuania, hosts Finland as well as the Great Britain side will seek to upset them.

Serbia, France, Greece and Slovenia also stand out as the strongest favourites.

Dark Horses

Turkey, hosts Latvia, their neighbours Lithuania, along with Italy and Turkey seem like the best picks for dark horse spots. With a fortunate draw and a lucky streak here and there, these squads could be in contention for medals.

Upsets that Failed to Qualify

The Croatian national team did not qualify for the championship. This is the first time in the country’s history that the Croatians have been forced to miss the EuroBasket, marking a dark period in their basketball chronicle.

Ukraine also failed to qualify, not reaching the final stage for the first time since 2009. Hungary, which played in the 2017 and 2022 championships, will also be absent.

The other two teams that competed in EuroBasket 2022 but will miss this year’s championship are Bulgaria and the Netherlands.

Debuts & Comebacks

Cyprus will make its debut in the European Basketball Championship, getting its place as the hosts of group C.

The Portuguese national team is returning to the championship for the first time since 2011, marking an impressive resurgence.

Sweden, which will compete alongside the British national team in Group B, has qualified for the championship for the first time since 2013. Latvia and Iceland are returning after missing EuroBasket 2022.

These are the top comeback stories to know!
