EuroBasket 2025 | Most Important Facts

4 Host Nations & 24 Teams

This upcoming tournament will be the 42nd European Basketball Championship and the fourth time in a row that the group stages are hosted in four different countries.

  • In 2015, the tournament took place in France, Croatia, Germany, and Latvia.
  • In 2017, it was held in Finland, Israel, Romania, and Turkey
  • In 2022, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Italy, and Germany hosted.

Since Eurobasket 2011, which took place in Lithuania, 24 teams qualify to compete in the Group phase, and this number will remain the same for the 2029 championship.

Spain is the Defending Champion

The Spanish national basketball team, which defeated France in the 2022 final, will seek to defend its title. This was the 4th win for Spain in the last six EuroBaskets. They won in 2009, 2011, 2015, and in 2022 to top it all off.

This year, the Spaniards will start their campaign in Group C, where they face Cyprus, Italy, Georgia, Greece, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Qualifying Path to the Main Tournament

Except for the four hosts (Finland, Poland, Cyprus, and Latvia), all national teams qualified for Eurobasket 2025 through the European Basketball Championship qualifiers. Interestingly enough, host teams still competed in the qualifiers, despite securing a spot in the main tournament way earlier.

The 2025 edition of EuroBasket will feature 19 teams that also competed in 2022 and only 5 newcomers or long-time absentees.

  • Cyprus will make its debut in the championship as the host country.
  • Portugal is returning after a 14-year hiatus.
  • Sweden will participate for the first time since 2013.
  • Latvia and Iceland are returning after missing the 2022 championship.

Surprising Snubs for EuroBasket 2025

Croatia’s basketball is continuing its struggle, as the perennial powerhouse failed to qualify for the main tournament for the first time in the country’s history.

Ukraine also failed to qualify for the first time since 2009. Also worth mentioning is Hungary, which played in the 2017 and 2022 championships, but will not be participating either.

Bulgaria and the Netherlands both played in Eurobasket 2022, but aren’t in the 2025 edition after failing to clear the qualifying obstacle.

EuroBasket 2025 | Format

The 2025 European Basketball Championship will utilise the same format all fans have grown accustomed to – 24 teams, split into 4 groups by 6.

About the Groups

The top 4 teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. Groups A and B and Groups C and D will meet in the round of 16, with the first-place team in each group playing the fourth-place team from another group, and the second-place team facing the third-place team in the other group.

As Great Britain is competing in Group B, if they advance to the Round of 16, the Brits will face an opponent from Group A. It includes Latvia, Serbia, Turkey, Israel, Estonia, Portugal, and the Czech Republic.
