Caribbean Premier League Betting & Odds

Often referred to as CPL or CPLT20, Caribbean Premier League is an annual Twenty20 cricket tournament that includes six teams from different countries of the Caribbean region. Its first edition was played in 2013.

The format of the Premier League includes a group stage and a knock out stage. During the group stage each team has to play a total of ten matches (two matches with every other team on the roster), with three of them on their home turf. All games are played at the home stadiums of the participating teams.

The top two performing teams advance to the Qualifier 1, while the next two teams in the league table go to play in the Eliminator. The winner of Qualifier 1 secures a place in the final, while the losing team plays against the winner of the Eliminator round. The winner of this Qualifier 2 round moves on to face the winner of Qualifier 1 in the final.

The current list of teams participating in the Caribbean Premier League is the following:

Team Home ground Captain Head coach

Caribbean Premier League Betting & Odds

Caribbean Premier League Betting

A lot of betting markets for Caribbean Premier League coincide with major popular betting markets in cricket: match winner, tournament winner, top batter, top bowler, and so on. We will take a detailed look at each of them a little later but before that, let’s break down how odds are calculated in cricket.

The odds and payouts in cricket generally work in the same way they do in other sports. The UK bookmakers will offer fractional odds (e.g. 7/4). Most European countries as well as some countries outside Europe prefer to operate on decimal odds (e.g. 2.5). And last but not least, the United States, Canada, and some other countries favour the so called American odds (e.g. +120, -150).

The odds represent how the bookmakers assess the likelihood of a particular outcome in cricket. The lower odds mean the bookies find it very probable, while higher odds mean bookmakers don’t think this result is likely to take place. Here is how you can calculate the probability based on the offered odds.

Let’s say, the bookmaker offers the odds of 4/1 for Team A to win. To calculate the probability of this outcome, you use the following formula: 1/(1+4) = 1/5 = 20%.

So the bookmakers think that there is a 20% chance that Team A will win. Usually, chances with probability higher than 25% are considered to have value in placing the bet. In Caribbean Premier League betting, the same principle applies — identifying value bets is important.

Similarly, probability can be calculated for decimal and American odds, though the formulas will be different.

For decimal odds, with the offered odds of 2.5: 100/2.5 = 40%. The bet is typically viewed as worth considering if the chances are over 22%.

American odds have two different formulas, one for the positive odds and one for the negative odds. For the offered odds of +200: 200/(200+100) = 0.66 or 66.66%. For the offered odds of – 300: 100/(300+100) = 0.25 or 25%.

Like any other sport, cricket offers a variety of betting markets that are suitable both for seasoned cricket loving bettors and novices of the game. Below, we will take a look at the most popular wagers in Caribbean Premier League betting and explain what each of them means.

  • Match Winner: This is the most straightforward and easy to understand bet. Here you are trying to predict the team that will win the match. To make an informed decision, you have to have some solid knowledge of both teams, follow the updates on their physical form, changes in the squad, recent injuries, and history with each other. If your prediction turns out to be true, your stake wins.
  • Tournament Winner: The essence behind this bet is the same as the previous one, but your task is somewhat larger. If you are placing a wager on this betting market, you are trying to predict which team will emerge as the winner of the tournament. While you still have to consider all the factors we mentioned in the previous bet, here the scale is bigger, because you are comparing not two but six teams to each other.
  • Top Bowler: Have you spotted an individual bowler who seems to have the capability to take the most wickets in the game? Then you can place a wager on this betting market. Here you have to be well familiar with both teams’ bowlers and their skills.
  • Top Batter: If you think there is one particular batter among the two competing teams who is most likely to score the most runs in the game, you may consider betting on this betting market. Here you have to be well familiar with both teams’ batters and their skills.
  • Man of the Match: Do you think one of the players has the skill and experience to show the best overall performance during the match? Predicting the results of this betting match can be either very easy or very difficult, depending on who is playing, what physical form the players are in, how they have performed recently, and what their overall cricket history is like.

Factors Affecting Caribbean Premier League Odds

Now that we have discussed a detailed breakdown of how cricket odds are calculated, let’s take a look at the aspects that influence how the bookmakers evaluate the chances of different outcomes. You can also take them into account if you want to place a wager. Some of these factors are common for all cricket games, but some are specific to T20 matches — and therefore have a direct impact on Caribbean Premier League odds, as this tournament belongs to that category.

Of course, team form is one of the most decisive factors in whether the team is going to achieve the victory. Bookmakers review recent performances of the team to see what results they have been showing lately. Their current standing in the league table or recognised rankings is also important, especially compared to that of the opponent team.

Once the team announces which of its squad players will come out on the field for a particular match, the odds might change once again. If some of the star players are currently out on an injury or have to perform their international duty in a different tournament, this might lower the team’s chances.

Cricket pitches may have different characteristics, and while an experienced player will be able to show good results in any conditions, whether the pitch is batting friendly or bowling friendly will affect certain aspects of the game. Speaking generally, pitches can be divided into three categories:

  • Hard/flat: With very little or no grass and moisture, it offers almost no assistance to bowlers. Correspondingly, it gives more advantage to batters as it has good pace and bounce.
  • Green/grassy: This pitch will have quite some amount of grass cover. Seam bowlers like this type of pitches because they can extract more lateral movement, though bounce can be quite unpredictable.
  • Dry/dusty: As this pitch is soft, it has a slower pace. It is the best for spinners because it can give some turn.

Weather is another crucial factor that affects cricket matches. If rain or other weather conditions make the pitch unfit for the game, the match may be stopped. If this happens to be a limited overs cricket match (and T20 belongs to this category), the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method, previously known as just the Duckworth–Lewis method, is used to calculate the target score for the team batting second. In this case, the target score refers to the number of runs needed for the team to win. While the method itself might seem a little complicated, there are plenty of online calculators that help define this number if you are curious.

Another factor to take into account is the toss result. In cricket, the captain of the team that wins the toss gets to decide whether their team will bat or field at the start of the match. While this is an important decision in all cricket games, in T20 it can have a crucial influence on the outcome of the match.
