The final of the 2023/2025 ICC World Test Championship is still a few days away, but the top nine teams of the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings are already starting their journey for the 2025/2027 ICC World Test Championship.
As part of the Championship, the Indian cricket team will tour England to play a series of five Test matches. The first one is set to take place on 20-24 June 2025 at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, starting at 11:00 am local time.
As Test cricket is considered the ultimate trial for the players’ skills and endurance, with one match lasting up to five days, the biennial tournament is the culmination for the best teams to prove their worth. Teams compete in various series during two years, receiving a certain number of points for each win, loss, or draw. Two teams who make it to the top of the league table advance to the finals to compete for the champion title.
The historic rivalry in cricket between India and England is so long lived and well known that it has even been portrayed in movies. During three editions since the establishment of the ICC World Test Championship neither India, nor England have won the trophy. While India had reached the finals twice (losing to New Zealand in the first edition and to Australia in the second one), England is yet to make it to the ultimate battle.
In light of this, this series is equally important for both teams. Not only will the outcome tip the figurative scales of their century long rivalry to one side or the other, it will also provide the winning team a significant boost towards the top of the league table.
England Team Preview
This game will be the second Test match of the season and the first match of the 2025/2027 ICC World Test Championship for England. The first Test game was a one-off against Zimbabwe and took place on 22–24 May 2025 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Captain Ben Stoke’s team won by an innings and 45 runs with the following score:

The 2023/2025 ICC World Test Championship wasn’t particularly successful for the English team. Having won and lost almost an equal number of games, they ended up in the fifth position of the league table, which is a position lower than the previous two seasons. As a result, they didn’t qualify for the finals.

Fans of the English team were in for a big surprise when the 14 player squad was announced for the series also known as the Tendulkar–Anderson Trophy. Jamie Overton will be returning to the squad after a three year gap. The right arm fast bowler made his Test debut on 23 June 2022 in a match against New Zealand that was a forming part of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship.
Unfortunately, Gus Atkinson has been injured in the match against Zimbabwe and won’t be making an appearance on the field. At the same time, Jacob Bethell who had to miss the same match will be returning to the squad for the series.
Ben Stokes will lead the team, while Jamie Smith will continue keeping the wicket as he did in the Zimbabwe Test. If you support the English team, keep an eye out for Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope. The trio made some amazing centuries against Zimbabwe, and now will play against India too.

The Indian Test team’s last played game was in the previous season, when they lost by 6 wickets to Australia in the final match of the Border–Gavaskar Trophy, a part of the 2023/2025 ICC World Test Championship.
Overall, the 2023/2025 ICC World Test Championship proved to be a bit of a disappointment for the team. Unlike the previous two editions, where India reached the finals and became the runner up both times, the results of the latest Championship placed them in third place. While it still was an impressive result, India didn’t get to participate in the finals.

With such legends of Indian cricket as Rohit Sharma and the former captain in all three formats, Virat Kohli, announcing their retirement from Test games about a month before the start of the tour, there have been certain concerns among the fans.
India enters the series with an 18 member squad that includes some new faces. Shubman Gill was appointed Test captain, with Rishabh Pant as his right hand. Besides the veterans Kohli and Sharma, two more absences will be quite notable on the field. Both Sarfaraz Khan and Mohammed Shami will not be joining the squad due to fitness requirements.
But fans will have several new faces to look out for. Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh will be making their debut appearance at a Test match following their achievements in Indian Premier League and 2024 T20 World Cup respectively.

Venue Spotlight: Headingley Cricket Ground
The first venue to host the Indian cricket team’s tour in England will be the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds. It is a part of the Headingley Stadium complex, with the other part dedicated to rugby games. It was established in 1890 and hosted its first cricket game the same year.
Headingley sports ground was initially designed to facilitate six types of sports: cricket, rugby, football, tennis, bowls, and cycling. Its development was largely supported by a group of benefactors headed by Lord Hawke, who was also an amateur cricket player. In 1903 it became the home base for the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
Today Headingley Cricket Ground stands to accommodate 18,350 spectators. This makes it the fifth largest cricket ground in the United Kingdom by capacity. During the 135 years of its existence, Headingley has seen its fair share of outstanding sporting events. Some of the interesting facts in its history include:
- First Test match was played between England and Australia on 29 June – 1 July 1899.
- Latest Test match was played between England and Australia on 6–9 July 2023.
- The best bowling analysis ever in first-class cricket belongs to spinner Hedley Verity who took 10 wickets for 10 runs in 1932 for Yorkshire vs Nottinghamshire.
- The only T20I was played between England and Pakistan on 18 July 2021.
