Horse racing is one of the longest established sports in Great Britain that holds a significant place in the country’s sport life but also in its overall cultural tradition. - Flat Racing: arguably the most common racing type, flat racing has horses race the distance between two points. Oval tracks are more typical, though straight tracks do exist as well. Race distances in Great Britain usually vary between 5 furlongs to 2 miles 5 furlongs 159 yards. Most of the time, the surface is turf.
- Jump Racing: in Great Britain and Ireland this type is mostly referred to as the National Hunt. It includes obstacles for the horses to jump over. Obstacles are divided into two categories: hurdles (with minimum eight obstacles over 3.5 ft high and a minimal distance of 3.2 km) and steeplechase (with a diverse set of large fence and ditch obstacles).
