It is believed that horse races found their way to Great Britain together with the Roman invasion. While there are no direct historical records of that, some archeological findings do indicate that certain discovered racecourses date as far back as the Roman period.
Some of the first horse races that we know of were registered in the 12th century documents during the reign of Henry II Plantagenet. These documents show that both races and tournaments were a common occurrence.
Today, The Grand National, The Derby, Cheltenham Gold Cup, and many others are among the worldwide known major British races. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) oversees all matters related to horse racing.
