Tennis Laver Cup 2024: Who’s Playing, Schedule, and First Day Matches

The 2024 Laver Cup, one of the most exciting upcoming events on the tennis calendar, is set to take place in Berlin this weekend (September 20-22). The tournament, named after the legendary Rod Laver, has quickly become a fan and player favourite, pitting the best of Europe against the rest of the world in a unique team competition format.

The question on everyone’s mind is whether Team Europe, led by the iconic Bjorn Borg, can reassert their dominance after back-to-back losses in London and Vancouver. Or will John McEnroe’s Team World continue their winning streak and claim a historic third consecutive title?

What We Can Expect from Day 1

Norwegian star Casper Ruud, who has never lost a match in his Laver Cup appearances, will face a tough test in the form of Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo. Ruud, currently ranked No. 9 in the world, holds a 3-3 head-to-head record against the Argentine, with their most recent meeting coming at the Paris Olympics, where Ruud emerged victorious.

In the second matchup, Stefanos Tsitsipas will look to avenge his recent US Open loss to Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis. The Greek star, a three-time Laver Cup participant, has a 4-3 record in the event, but Kokkinakis is currently brimming with confidence after his victory at Flushing Meadows.

The night session will feature the return of Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov to Laver Cup action, as he takes on Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo. Dimitrov, a fan favourite, will be keen to make his mark on the tournament once again.

The final match of the day will see a doubles encounter, with the pairing of Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev facing off against the American duo of Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton What a fitting finale to an action-packed opening day!
