Every year, the Blenheim Horse Trials, or the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials, grace Oxford as eventing fans look forward to this equestrian sport. In September, this event attracts some of the most accomplished riders from all over the world as they compete for this prestigious title.
It covers three phases—dressage, cross country and show jumping—that take place in the Duke of Marlborough’s home, the Blenheim Palace. Riders contest in the three phases in either of the two classes, CCI4* Long Format or CCI4* Short Format for younger, eight and nine-year-old horses.
The first Blenheim Horse Trials was held in 1990 with the CCI4* L class. The CCI4* S class was added much later in 2009. Blenheim Horse Trials 2024: Provisional Schedule
The majestic Blenheim Horse Trials is called a ‘three-day event’ because it covers three different phases, even when it runs for four days. Let’s take a look at the provisional schedule.

Dressage
The dressage test examines the rider’s skills and ability to perform harmoniously with the horse. Basically, the rider-horse combination undergoes a set of predetermined movements that throw light on the suppleness and flexibility of the horse. How the rider controls the horse also displays the fluidity of its movements.
Cross Country
This phase can be quite challenging as it’s a physically demanding discipline. It consists of a long stretch of outdoor terrain that the rider has to overcome along with multiple obstacles. The cross country phase tests the endurance and agility of the rider and the horse as they try to manoeuvre through the course without getting penalties.

Show Jumping
The last phase of eventing, show jumping, involves physically demanding challenges where the horse and rider have to overcome obstacles with clear, high jumps. They have to ensure they don’t knock down the obstacles and complete the test in the given time.
