Volleyball became a part of the Summer Olympics in 1964 for both women and men. Beach volleyball had to wait a little longer. The sport was introduced as a demonstration event during the 1992 Games and was officially included in 1996.
Brazil, the former Soviet Union, and the US are the three most successful men’s volleyball teams at the Olympics, having won multiple gold medals. Brazil and the Soviet Union have won six medals each, while the United States has won five.
In the women’s event, the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, Japan, and Brazil have won multiple gold medals. The US has won just a single gold medal, but its total volleyball Olympic medal tally stands at six, making it one of the most consistent teams at the podium. Since Beijing 2008, Team USA has won a medal on each occasion at the Olympics in women’s volleyball.
Cuba, the third-most successful team in women’s volleyball, failed to qualify for this edition of the Olympics. Their last participation at the Olympics happened in Beijing 2008.
Now coming to beach volleyball – Team USA and Brazil are the only multiple gold medal winners in the men’s category. Brazil has won six medals, including two gold, three silver, and one bronze. Team USA has won three gold medals and one silver. Apart from these countries, Germany and Norway are the only other teams that have won a gold medal in this event.
In the women’s beach volleyball Games, Team USA again leads the tally with multiple gold medals. Barring the 2016 Games, the US has won a gold medal in each of their outings since 2004. Brazil, Australia, and Germany are the only gold medal winners apart from the US in this event.
For the first time in Olympic volleyball history, each team at the 2024 Games will have the opportunity to include a non-competing athlete to substitute for a player due to medical reasons. This change will result in team rosters expanding from 12 to 13 athletes.
