Introducing the Belgium F1 Grand Prix 2024

Officially called the Belgian Grand Prix, the first national racing was launched in 1925. It was only natural that it was held in the Spa region, as it has played a big role in the motor sport since the early days of its existence. The circuit, which is still in use today, was built in 1921, but until 1924 it was only used for motorcycle racing.

The circuit length is 7.004 km (4.352 mi). With the race length being 308.052 km (191.398 mi), it means drivers have to complete 44 laps. As of 2024, the Belgian Grand Prix has been held 79 times.

History of Belgian Grand Prix

The Belgian Grand Prix has always been one of the most favoured races in Formula One. The Spa-Francorchamps circuit offers eye-catching landscapes that add a beautiful frame to the race. In the period between 1925 and 1973 the race was granted the honorific title of the European Grand Prix six times. In 1977 this title became obsolete.

Michael Schumacher (Germany) and Ferrari (Italy) have the biggest number of wins in the Belgian Grand Prix as the driver and the constructors respectively. Schumacher has an accumulated total of 6 victories, while Ferrari have won the race 18 times.

Other most recurring winning drivers include Ayrton Senna (Brazil) with 5 wins; Jim Clark (UK), Kimi Räikkönen (Finland), and Lewis Hamilton (UK) with 4 wins each; Juan Manuel Angio (Argentina), Damon Hill (UK), Sebastian Vettel (Germany), and Max Verstappen (Netherlands) with 3 wins per driver; Alberto Ascari (Italy), Emerson Fittipaldi (Brazil), Niki Lauda (Austria), and Alain Prost (France) with 2 wins each.

Among the constructors, two British teams follow Ferrari in the number of most wins at the Belgian Grand Prix. These are McLaren with 14 wins and Lotus with 8 wins.

During the previous 2023 Belgian Grand Prix ten teams competed in the race. Monacan Charles Leclerc driving for Ferrari won the pole position with 1:46.988, while British Lewis Hamilton driving for Mercedes won the fastest lap with 1:47.305. The places on the podium were divided the following way:

  1. M. Verstappen (Netherlands), team Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT (Austria) 1:22:30.450
  2. S. Pérez (Mexico), team Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT (Austria) +22.305
  3. C. Leclerc (Monaco), team Ferrari +32.259

What To Expect at the 2024 Race

Belgium F1 Grand Prix 2024 will include several events. There are three practices scheduled before the main race: two on 26 July and one on 27 July. A qualifying round will follow in the evening of 27 July. The Grand Prix race starts at 15:00 local time on 28 July.

While the temperatures remain favourable throughout the event, there is an above average chance of rain, especially during the practice and qualifiers. Forecast for the race itself shows only 14% of rain. However, the Spa region is well-known for its unpredictable and rapidly changing weather, so the forecast might change before the actual event.

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

Mostly casually referred to as simply Spa, the circuit in the village of Francorchamps is one of the three circuits on the territory of Belgium that participate in the Belgian Grand Prix. The other two are Circuit Zolder and Nivelles-Baulers. Out of the three, Spa is the oldest and the most popular one.

Since the year of its launch in 1925, Spa was left out of the Belgian Grand Prix only twice, in 2003 and 2006. It used to be longer, but in 1979 it underwent major reconstructions and was shortened from 14.100 km (8.761 mi) to 6.947 km (4.317 mi). Public roads were excluded from the circuit out of safety concerns, and after that the circuit became permanent.
