FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers โ€“ The Biggest Jaw-Droppers

This FIBA EuroBasket 2025 qualifying stage is a formality for some national squads. However, we have seen a few unexpected jaw-droppers, and we name the biggest surprises of the qualifying round.

Spain

What the current FIBA EuroBasket champions have shown is the biggest surprise of this first qualifying round. Spain lost at home to Latvia and lost away from home to Belgium, which is their most memorable victory in recent times. The results and videos of Spain’s first qualifying round:

Spain 75 โ€“ 79 Latvia

Belgium 58 โ€“ 53 Spain

The weirdest thing is that Spain had put together a capable squad. The team consisted of such names as Ricky Rubio, Juancho Hernangรณmez, Darรญo Brizuela, Joel Parra and Alberto Abalde. The situation is not yet desperate because Latvia has already secured a place in next year’s championship.

However, the same Spaniards, Belgians and Slovakians will fight for the other two tickets. Even if the Spaniards do not play on the highest level โ€“ third place secures the spot. If the competition ended today, Belgium and Spain would qualify for next year’s tournament and leave Slovakia behind.

Ukraine

Because of the ongoing war in Ukraine, Ukrainian people cannot support their nation in the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers. It was one of the most disappointing teams in the first round โ€“ they lost both matches. The grandest blow came in a temporary home arena in Riga. The Ukrainians lost to Portugal, which surprisingly moved up to third place and maintains a good chance of being among the top two qualifying teams.

Since no hosts participate in Group A, only the two strongest national teams will travel to next year’s FIBA EuroBasket 2025. Ukraine’s defeat in Slovenia may not be astonishing, but the defeat suffered in Riga is a real stupefaction. After Diogo Gameiro’s 3pt in the second half, the lead increased to 19 points (26:45), and after the first two quarters, Ukraine had a 15-point deficit. The intrigue returned in the 2nd half, but the victory was too far off. The results and videos of Ukraine’s first qualifying round:

Slovenia 87 โ€“ 73 Ukraine

Ukraine 77 โ€“ 79 Portugal

Lithuania

The situation of the Lithuanian national team is much worse than anticipated. If the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers concluded today, Lithuania would not partake in next year’s tournament. Poland, one of the four hosts of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 and one of the strongest teams in Group H, is in last place.

It unlocks all the padlocks for Estonia and North Macedonia to take the remaining two tickets and secure a place in the European basketball festival. We remind you that if one of the host nations participates in one of eight groups โ€“ three teams qualify:

  • The host country
  • The other two nations

The results and videos of Lithuania’s first qualifying round:

Lithuania 83 โ€“ 64 Poland

Estonia 65 โ€“ 59 Lithuania
