Southampton was one of the founding members of the Premier League. Ironically though, it has struggled time and again to stay in the top flight.
Their only major trophy in 139 years came in 1976—a 1–0 FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
From then on, there have been several ups and downs (more downs than ups). They have been relegated twice from the Premier League and have had managers changed several times. Undoubtedly, the Saints, as they are popularly known, are in a slump.
However, with the arrival of manager Russell Martin in June 2023, Southampton’s odds have slightly improved. Under Martin, the Saints won the Championship and returned to the Premier League. From September 2023 to February 2024, they also went 25 games without a loss.
Will the Saints be able to shed the “bottom team” tag In the 2024–25 football season? Let’s look at the Southampton odds in the Premier League, and FA Cup and their squad lineup for this season.
Overview of Southampton Betting Odds
Southampton has frequently changed its managers. The club sees a new coach almost every year. The only coach to survive long in recent years was Ralph Hasenhuttl, who managed the club from 2018 to 2022. The lowest points in his career were a 0–9 loss to Leicester City in 2019, and yet another 0–9 loss to Manchester United in 2021.
Current coach Russell Martin has laid out his approach for this season. “We have to try to avoid hanging on and defending for long periods. We also have to accept there are going to be times when we have to defend and spend a bit less time on the ball than we would like….I’ll never be that comfortable not having most of the ball. I know that,” Martin said in an interview.
Here are the club’s odds for different tournaments this season:
Southampton Premier League Odds for 2024-25
Southampton was relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2022-23 season. However, they are back this season after a thrilling 1-0 victory over Leeds United in the Championship play-off final earlier this year.
They have been promoted to the English Premier League, along with Leicester City and Ipswich Town.
Before this, they had a six-year absence (2005–11) in the top league.
In the last 10 years, their highest Premier League achievement was a sixth-placed finish in the 2014-15 season. That season, the Saints’ squad included future Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane.
In the last five seasons, they’ve lingered near the bottom of the table:
Season | League Standing |
2023-24 | n/a |
2022-23 | 20th (relegated to second division) |
2021-22 | 15th |
2020-21 | 15th |
2019-20 | 11th |
They are staring at relegation again in the current season, with several matches lost. And, as Southampton lingers in the relegation zone, you can expect the odds to be high.
Meanwhile, Coach Russel Martin is working hard to steer the team to safety. He has brought two strong strikers – Cameron Archer (transferred from Aston Villa) and Ben Brereton (transferred from Villareal) to improve the attack. If they are able to improve the goal difference, we may get to see the Saints again in the next season.

Southampton Manager Odds for 2024-25
Martin is known for his possession-based style of play. Southampton has had ball possession at 56.6% this season. Yet, they are not able to convert it to goals.
Moreover, their attack is lacking and they haven’t created good chances for goals. Martin prefers to build the game slowly. However, this gives more time to opponents to organise their defence.
Clearly, Martin believes in “trust the process”. But as the pressure of losses mounts, some names are doing the rounds that could replace him – Jesse Marsch (head coach of the Canadian football team), Kjetil Knutsen (coach of Norwegian club FK Bodo/Glimt), and Marcelo Gallardo (River Plate coach).
Southampton Squad
Martin has shuffled the Saints squad this season. Eighteen new players have been added to the team, and 12 have been transferred or loaned out.
