The first day of the Glorious Goodwood 2026 welcomes the visitors of the Goodwood Racecourse with eight exciting races. The feature race of the day is the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes, which is also the only Group 1 race conducted on day one. This year it falls on Tuesday, 28 July.

The Goodwood Cup is a Group 1 flat horse race that accepts both male and female horses aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 2 miles (3,219 metres). In the first several years of its existence since 1808 the race was contested for a silver cup. But after it was permanently handed over to the owner of the three times winner Bucephalus, the new version of the race introduced a gold cup. In modern Britain, the Goodwood Cup is considered one of the leading events for stayers, i.e. horses specialising in long distances.

In this article we will go through the list of runners declared to run in this season’s race, review the race card for the entire first day, and take a closer look at some of the most promising runners and market’s favourites to compete in the race.

Goodwood Cup 2026 Runners

As one of the most prestigious races for long distance runners, the Goodwood Cup is on the dream list of wins for every horse fitting the race criteria. This year it offers a considerable prize purse of £500,000. As the race doesn’t limit participation by gender or upper age threshold, each year horse racing enthusiasts can expect a great selection of outstanding performers at the start line, competing for the gold cup and the title of the champion.

Currently, there are 8 runners announced to compete in this year’s race, but this number may change before the day of the race. Some of the jockeys for the race have already been announced, others are still awaiting confirmation.

The current full list of contenders, their jockeys and trainers runs as follows:

  1. Amiloc (age 4, jockey Hector Crouch, trainer Ralph Beckett)
  2. French Master (age 5, jockey James Doyle, trainer John & Thady Gosden)
  3. Illinois (age 5, jockey unconfirmed, trainer Aidan O’Brien)

Who to Look Out for at the Goodwood Cup 2026

Every year, some of the best stayers, i.e. horses specialising in long distances, come to the Glorious Goodwood to contest for the Goodwood Cup together with their trainers and jockeys. Given the fact that the race doesn’t limit participation by the upper age limit, any runner is allowed to enter the Goodwood Cup as many times as their trainers and owners will see it reasonable. Currently, the horse that has collected more champion titles and cups in the race than any other starting from its inaugural race is Stradivarius. He won the Goodwood Cup four times in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The latest winner in 2025 was a 3 year old bay colt Scandinavia. While the highest result he showed in his debut season of 2024 was second place in the JenningsBet Newmarket British EBF Maiden Stakes (Newmarket Racecourse, August 2024), in 2025 he won four out of the five races he participated in. Besides the Goodwood Cup, Scandinavia also took home the champion title for the Betfred St Leger Stakes, one of the British Classics (Doncaster Racecourse, September 2025). Since the start of the current season, he has participated in three races and won all three of them, including the Gold Cup during the Royal Ascot week (Ascot Racecourse, June 2026). He has been declared to participate in this year’s race. Scandinavia was trained by Aidan O’Brien and led on the track by jockey Wayne Lordan.

Scandinavia

  • Age: 4 years old
  • Sex and colour: bay colt
  • Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
  • Major achievements: 7 out of 11 wins, including Ascot Gold Cup (June 2026) and Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (July 2025)

As the defending champion of the race, Scandinavia immediately attracts attention of both the audiences and bookmakers. His favourite status is heavily supported by three wins out of three races he has participated in this year, including the Gold Cup at the Ascot Racecourse in this season’s Royal Ascot.

In the 2025 season, Aidan O’Brien’s charge also achieved a number of high profile wins. This included the Bahrain Trophy Stakes during the July Festival (Newmarket Racecourse, July 2025), Betfred St Leger Stakes (Doncaster Racecourse, September 2025), and, of course, his first win in the Goodwood Cup.

Trawlerman

  • Age: 8 years old
  • Sex and colour: bay gelding
  • Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
  • Major achievements: 11 out of 24 wins, including Ascot Gold Cup (June 2025) and Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (October 2025)

After their first meeting at the Ascot Gold Cup this season, Trawlerman, who came second after Scandinavia, is getting ready once again to face his rival. While the Gold Cup was the only race he participated in this season, in 2025 he bagged four impressive wins, including the Ascot Gold Cup (June 2025) and Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (October 2025), both at the Ascot Racecourse.

In his six years of racing career, John & Thady Gosden’s charge proved himself to be one of the most consistent stayers in the current scene. Interestingly, this is the first time he is coming back to the Goodwood Racecourse after his win in the Coral Summer Handicap that took place in July 2022.

Rahiebb

  • Age: 4 years old
  • Sex and colour: bay colt
  • Trainer: Roger Varian
  • Major achievements: 2 out of 9 wins, including Boodles Yorkshire Cup Stakes (May 2026) and Weekly Free Bets With BetMGM Novice Stakes (March 2025)

Rahiebb is still a newcomer on the flat horse racing scene, who only debuted last season. While as of now he only has two wins to his credit, namely his maiden race of Weekly Free Bets With BetMGM Novice Stakes (Newcastle Racecourse, March 2025) and Boodles Yorkshire Cup Stakes (York Racecourse, May 2026), his stamina and performance earned him a place among the favourites for the race.

Roger Varian’s charge showed outstanding results throughout his debut season, having finished second in four races. This included the Betfred St Leger Stakes at the Doncaster Racecourse in September 2025 (winner Scandinavia) and Sky Bet Handicap at the York Racecourse in May 2025 (winner Merchant). Another impressive placement was finishing third in the Queen’s Vase during the Royal Ascot week (Ascot Racecourse, June 2025, winner Carmers).

Lazy Griff

  • Age: 4 years old
  • Sex and colour: bay colt
  • Trainer: Charlie Johnston
  • Major achievements: 3 out of 10 wins, including Coral Marathon (July 2026) and De Conde Stakes (September 2024)

Lazy Griff debuted in 2024 at the Doncaster Racecourse where he ran in the Ice Cream Direct EBF Maiden Stakes and was placed second (June 2024, winner Wolf Of Badenoch). He went on to win two races in the same year, Keith Walker Never Change Your Mind Memorial EBF Novice Stakes (Beverly Racecourse, July 2024) and De Conde Stakes (Chantilly Racecourse, France, September 2024).

Charlie Johnston’s charge continued to show impressive results in the 2025 season. He was placed second in the Boodles Chester Vase Stakes (Chester Racecourse, May 2025, winner Lambourn) and Betfred Epsom Derby (Epsom Downs Racecourse, June 2025, winner Lambourn). He started the 2026 season by winning one of the two races he has run in so far, namely the Coral Marathon (Sandown Park Racecourse, July 2026).

French Master

  • Age: 5 years old
  • Sex and colour: bay gelding
  • Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
  • Major achievements: 4 out of 11 wins, including Copper Horse Stakes (June 2025) and BetGoodwin Download The App Handicap (May 2025)

This will be the third time French Master is returning to the Goodwood Racecourse and second time he is running in the Goodwood Cup in the course of his racing career. In 2025 he participated in two races at the venue. In May he won the BetGoodwin Download The App Handicap, then in July finished second in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes, coming to the finishing line behind Scandinavia. Another notable achievement of the 2025 season for him was winning the Copper Horse Stakes during the Royal Ascot week (Ascot Racecourse, June 2025).

In his debut season of 2024 John & Thady Gosden’s charge bagged two wins, the bettingsites.co.uk Safe Betting Sites Novice Stakes (Doncaster Racecourse, July 2024) and Unibet More Extra Place Races Novice Stakes (Kempton Park Racecourse, October 2024). Since the beginning of the 2026 season, he has participated in three races, Queen Alexandra Stakes during the Royal Ascot week among them, where he finished second (Ascot Racecourse, June 2026, winner Illinois).
