With the Davis Cup explained in brief: founded in 1900 as a competition between Great Britain and the USA, it has grown into the world’s largest annual international men’s tennis event.
160 nations entered the 2026 edition, and the Davis Cup is the tennis equivalent of the World Cup. After a series of qualifiers and World Group playoffs, the season culminates with the Final 8, where eight nations play in one city.
The 2026 Final will be played at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, Italy, from 24 to 29 November. Our Davis Cup explained page discusses the qualifying format, including how ties unfold, and we’ve listed recent winners.
How the Davis Cup Format Works
The Davis Cup takes place all over the world, and this year’s edition kicked off on 5 February with the Qualifiers first round, World Group I and World Group II playoffs. This is how each part of the Davis Cup format works:
- Qualifiers first round – 26 nations compete in 13 home-or-away ties across two days. The 13 winning nations take part in the Qualifiers second round, played in September.
- Qualifiers second round – Teams that win their first round progress to the second round of Qualifiers, and they are joined by one of the wild cards from the previous year’s Finals. For 2026, the 2025 runners-up, Spain, were given a wild card, so they received a bye to the qualifiers second round.
- Winning in the qualifiers’ second round means teams book their place in the Davis Cup Final 8 alongside Italy, the last remaining wild card.
- The Davis Cup is played over three weeks — one week at the start of the season just after the Australian Open, one in September (after the US Open), and the other at the end of the tennis season in November.
- The Final 8 is contested over a six-day event, comprising quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the Final itself, where there are three rubbers instead of five.
How a Davis Cup Tie Is Played
Ties for the qualifiers and the Final 8 vary in terms of matches played, as this table draws attention to:
| Stage | Rubbers | Format |
| Qualifiers | Two singles matches on day 1; followed by doubles and two reverse singles on day 2 | Best of three sets |
| Final 8 | Two singles matches and one doubles | Best of three sets |
Previously, matches were played even though the result of the tie was already decided. They were known as ‘dead rubbers’.
In qualifiers, for example, the winner will be the country that wins the majority of their matches. In this case, they will need to win at least three of their five matches. In the Final 8, the two singles rubbers are played first. If they are split 1–1, the doubles decides the tie; if one nation wins both singles, the doubles is usually not played.
