Doncaster St Leger Festival 2026: Runners & Racecard

As September settles in, it is time for one of the most prestigious and awaited flat horse racing events to take centrestage. Betfred St Leger Festival 2026 is scheduled to take place between Thursday, 10 September and Sunday, 13 September at its traditional venue of the Doncaster Racecourse. It will include one of the glorious races of the British Classics, St Leger Stakes, as its headline. This year the race celebrates its 250th anniversary.

This year the St Leger Festival will open with The British Stallion Studs ‘Carrie Red’ EBF Fillies Nursery Handicap Stakes as its first race, while The Danum Homes Excellence In Build Apprentice Handicap Stakes will close the entire event. 

The feature races for each day are: Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes for day one, Doncaster Cup for day two, St Leger Stakes for day three, and Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes for day four. St Leger Stakes also headlines the entire event.

  • Win: The main aim of this market is to predict the race outcome. As a bettor, you place a wager on a horse that you find the most likely to win.   • Place: This betting market aims to predict if a horse will finish the race in the winning top. The number of winning places ranges between two and four, depending on the number of runners before the start. What works in your favour is that you don’t have to predict the exact place your horse will take, so you bet at a lower risk. A strong contender also has a better chance of being placed than winning the race. 
  • Each Way: This betting market allows you to place two different bets on the same horse in one race. The first is a win bet, while the other is a place bet. Since they are considered two different bets, your stake will double. But if the horse wins, you will get a payout on both stakes. If the horse is placed, you will lose your win stake but are still eligible for a payout on your place stake. 
  • Forecast/Tricast: This betting market allows you to predict the first two (forecast) or three (tricast) horses to come to the finish line. Your stake remains the same in both cases because it is considered a single wager. The straight version requires you to correctly predict the order in which all horses will come to the finish line, while the reverse forecast and combination tricast only require you to predict the names, allowing the horses to finish in any order within the winning top. In both cases, if a horse falls behind, you will lose even if the others finish the race as predicted.

Headline Races at the Betfred St Leger Festival

The St Leger Festival 2026 meeting includes 30 races, with eight races conducted on the first and the second days of the event and seven races on the third and fourth day of the event. It includes one Group 1 race, which also headlines the meeting. A rich variety of race conditions and some of the best runners entering the competitions ensure that every race goer visiting the Doncaster Racecourse between 10 and 13 September will find something to their taste.

 

Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes (Thursday, 10 September)

The Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race that accepts fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards (2,922 metres).

This race was established in 1839 and named after an estate owned by the founder of Doncaster’s most famous race, Anthony St Leger. Often called Fillies’ St. Leger, it received its Group 2 status in 1971 when the modern classification system was first introduced in the UK.

Despite the race not establishing an upper age limit, so far no horse has won the champion title more than once. 

The most successful jockey of the race is Frankie Dettori with 7 wins (Anna of Saxony 1993, Noble Rose 1995, Echoes in Eternity 2004, Eastern Aria 2010, Meeznah 2011, Free Wind 2021, Mimikyu 2022).

Two trainers share the highest number of wins: John Scott (Mickleton Maid 1839, Sally 1842, Peggy 1843, Canezou 1848, Honeysuckle 1854, Hepatica 1858, Toison d’Or 1869) and Noel Murless (Bara Bibi 1954, Collyria 1959, Bracey Bridge 1965, Pink Gem 1967 (dead-heat), Parmelia 1970, Attica Meli 1972, Mil’s Bomb 1974), each with 7 wins.

The latest winner in 2025 was a 4 year old bay filly Santorini Star. This was her fourth and last win of the season that included Sky Bet Stayers Handicap at the York Racecourse in August and British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap at the Goodwood Racecourse in May. She started the 2026 season by winning the Betfred Jockey Club Stakes at the Newmarket Racecourse in May and later added three second places and one last place to her form. She hasn’t been declared to participate in this year’s race. Santorini Star was trained by William Haggas and led on the track by jockey Tom Marquand.

Doncaster Cup (Friday, 11 September)

The Doncaster Cup is a Group 2 flat horse race that accepts both male and female horses aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 2 miles 1 furlong and 197 yards (3,600 metres).

The race had its first run in 1766 under the name Doncaster Gold Cup. To date, it remains the oldest surviving race conducted at the Doncaster Racecourse, as it is ten years older than St Leger. It is one of the flagship races for stayers in Britain and is a part of the Stayers’ Triple Crown that also includes the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup. 

The only horse that won more editions of the race than any other runner is Beeswing with 4 wins (1837, 1840, 1841, 1842).

Though some of the names of the jockeys for the early winners are unknown, one jockey holds the title of the most successful one since the 1820s, namely Joe Mercer with 8 wins (Nick La Rocca 1953 (dead-heat), Grey of Falloden 1964, The Accuser 1968, Biskrah 1972, Sea Anchor 1976, Buckskin 1978, Le Moss 1979, 1980).

Two trainers share the same highest number of wins: Cecil Boyd-Rochfort (Alcazar 1934, Black Devil 1935, Osborne 1954, Atlas 1956, Agreement 1958, 1959, Raise You Ten 1963) and Sir Henry Cecil (Buckskin 1978, Le Moss 1979, 1980, Ardross 1982, Kneller 1988, Great Marquess 1991, Canon Can 1997), each with 7 wins.

The latest winner in 2025 was a 6 year old bay gelding Sweet William. This was his only win of the 2025 season, while some other achievements included a fourth place in the Ascot Gold Cup during the Royal Ascot week in June and a third place in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes during the Goodwood Festival in July. He started the 2026 season with a win in the Longines Sagaro Stakes at the Ascot Racecourse in May, then added a second place in the Star Sports Henry II Stakes at the Sandown Park Racecourse in May and a third place in the Gold Cup at the Ascot Racecourse in June. He hasn’t been declared to participate in this year’s race. Sweet William was trained by John & Thady Gosden and led on the track by jockey Robert Havlin.

St Leger Stakes (Saturday, 12 September)

The St Leger Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race that accepts colts and fillies aged three years. It is run over a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards (2,921 metres).

This year, it will celebrate its 250th anniversary since its establishment in 1776. This makes it the oldest among the five British Classics. It is also chronologically the last on the annual flat horse racing calendar and the longest among five. Besides, it is a part of the English Triple Crown alongside the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby Stakes, as well as the Fillies Triple Crown that also includes the 1,000 Guineas and The Oaks Stakes.

The strict age limit means that each runner has only one chance in their racing career to enter and try to win the St Leger champion title. Correspondingly, there are no records of repeated winners.

Bill Scott is the most successful jockey of the race with 9 wins (Jack Spigot 1821, Memnon 1825, The Colonel 1828, Rowton 1829, Don John 1838, Charles the Twelfth 1839, Launcelot 1840, Satirist 1841, Sir Tatton Sykes 1846).

The undisputed leader among trainers is John Scott with 16 wins (Matilda 1827, The Colonel 1828, Rowton 1829, Margrave 1832, Touchstone 1834, Don John 1838, Charles the Twelfth 1839, Launcelot 1840, Satirist 1841, The Baron 1845, Newminster 1851, West Australian 1853, Warlock 1856, Imperieuse 1857, Gamester 1859, The Marquis 1862).

The latest winner in 2025 was a 3 year old bay colt Scandinavia. This was his fourth win of the season. Others included the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes during the Goodwood Festival in July, the Bahrain Trophy Stakes at the Newmarket Racecourse in July, and the Book Your Summer BBQ On June 7th Maiden at the Navan Racecourse in May. He began the 2026 season with 4 wins out of 4 starts, including the Gold Cup during the Royal Ascot week in June and the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes at the Goodwood Racecourse in July. Scandinavia was trained by Aidan O’Brien and led on the track by jockey Tom Marquand.

Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes (Sunday, 13 September)

The Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race that accepts fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs and 6 yards (1,414 metres).

The newest among the feature races of the St Leger Festival, it was established in 1982 and named after a filly whose successful career unfolded in the early 1900s. It initially was held over a distance of 1 mile as a Listed race but was upgraded to Group 3 in 2011. 

While the race conditions permit the runners to enter multiple times in the course of a racing career, so far there have been no instances of the same runner winning the race more than once.

The leading jockey is Michael Hills with 4 wins (My Branch 1996, Mamounia 2002, Tantina 2003, Royal Confidence 2008).

The title of the most successful trainer who raised the highest number of champions belongs to Barry Hills with 5 wins (Asteroid Field 1986, My Branch 1996, Mamounia 2002, Tantina 2003, Royal Confidence 2008).

The latest winner in 2025 was a 4 year old bay filly Fair Angellica. This was her second win of the season after she took the first place in the British Stallion Studs EBF Cathedral Stakes at the Salisbury Racecourse in May. Since the beginning of the 2026 season she hasn’t taken part in any race. She hasn’t been declared to participate in this year’s race. Fair Angellica was trained by Richard Hughes and led on the track by jockey Finley Marsh.

May Hill Stakes (Thursday, 10 September)

The May Hill Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race that accepts fillies aged two years. It is run over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres).

It was established in 1976 and named after a successful contemporary filly. It was originally classified as Group 3 and later promoted to Group 2 in 2003.

Because of the age limit, there are no repeated participants and, correspondingly, winners in this race.

The most successful jockey is Frankie Dettori with 6 wins (Calando 1998, Teggiano 1999, White Moonstone 2010, Lyric of Light 2011, Indigo Girl 2020, Inspiral 2021).

The latest winner in 2025 was a 2 year old chestnut filly Aylin. This was the second win of her debut season. Before the May Hill Stakes, she participated in the Tatler British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes during the Goodwood Festival in July. She hasn’t participated in any races since the start of the 2026 season. Aylin was trained by Karl Burke and led on the track by jockey David Egan.

Flying Childers Stakes (Friday, 11 September)

The Flying Childers Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race that accepts both male and female horses aged two years. It is run over a distance of 5 furlongs and 3 yards (1,008 metres).

It was established in 1967 and originally carried the name of Norfolk Stakes. The rebranding took place in 1973, when the race took the name of a famous 18th century racehorse bred near Doncaster. Initially a Group 1 race, it was downgraded to Group 2 in 1979.

The age limit prevents runners from entering the race more than once during their career, that’s why there are no repeated winners on the record.

Frankie Dettori holds the title of the leading jockey with 6 wins (Howick Falls 2003, Fleeting Spirit 2007, Sand Vixen 2009, Gutaifan 2015, Ardad 2016, A’ali 2019).

The most successful trainer is Sir Michael Stoute with 5 wins (Music Maestro 1977, Marwell 1980, Green Desert 1985, Raah Algharb 1994, Saddad 2001).

The latest winner in 2025 was a 2 year old chestnut filly Revival Power. This was the third win of her debut season. The other two included the Julia Graves Roses Stakes at the York Racecourse in August and the Marion Gibson Brown Memorial – Irish EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at the Thirsk Racecourse in May. Since the start of the 2026 season she has run in 4 races, with the highest outcome being the seventh place in the British Stallion Studs EBF Westow Stakes at the York Racecourse in May. Revival Power was trained by Tim Easterby and led on the track by jockey Oisin Murphy.
