Tennis: US Open 2024 Begins This Week

Many fans and athletes are still celebrating the outcomes of the tennis tournament during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, and there is already a new event knocking on the door. Having finished its preliminary rounds in the period between 19 and 22 August, the US Open in tennis started its actual tournament on Monday, 26 August.

Conducted as part of the 2024 ATP Tour and 2024 WTA Tour, the US Open is chronologically the last Grand Slam event of the year. The other three events preceding it are the Australian Open (starting in the middle of January), French Open (starting in late May), and the oldest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon Championships (starting in late June or early July).

Tennis: US Open 2024

Starting on the last Monday of August, the US Open lasts for two weeks just like its other Grand Slam counterparts. It is also the second oldest tennis tournament among the four, having been established in 1881, just four years after Wimbledon.

In terms of the ground surface, the US Open is a hardcourt, same as the French Open and the Australian Open, with only Wimbledon out of the four still being played on grass surfaces. Since 1978 the US Open has been held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

An interesting fact about the tournament is that, unlike other Grand Slam events, it wasn’t cancelled during either World War I or World War II, or during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

There are five primary championships in the tournament:

  • men’s singles
  • women’s singles
  • men’s doubles
  • women’s doubles
  • mixed doubles

Other events include senior players, junior players, and wheelchair tennis.

2024 Tennis US Open: A Full Guide

This year the US Open holds its 144th edition. Lasting over two weeks between 26 August and 8 September, the tournament will be conducted in its usual location in Queens, New York. Nine events will span over 17 courts of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, including the main showcourts — Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and Grandstand.

With the wheelchair tennis event absent from this year’s programme, it has caused a significant controversy among the athletes. With the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games starting off just two days after the beginning of the US Open and both events ending on the same day, the organizers of the tennis tournament decided to conduct this year’s competition without wheelchair tennis, as some players would be attending the Paralympics.

The current champions in men’s singles and women’s singles, Novak Djokivic and Coco Gauff, will both be entering the tournament to defend their titles. The 2020 US Open champion and former world number 3, Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem will be making his final professional major appearance before he retires in October this year after the Vienna Open.
