Ipswich vs Man City | Current Situations in the Premier League

Ipswich Town in 2024/25 Premier League

Before the 2024/25 season, Ipswich Town were considered a team that would have a challenge just staying in the Premier League. Even though the start of their campaign was brutal, Kieran McKenna’s squad beat Tottenham as big underdogs for their first victory in the Premier League in over two decades.

So far, the highlight of the season is probably the 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Portman Road on December 30. Fans rejoiced as it was also their first home Premier League win in over two decades. The past 5 matches have been significantly better for the side compared to the start of the season. However, even as hosts, they come into this match as the obvious underdog, both by odds and expert predictions.

Their top player is obviously Liam Delap, who has netted 8 goals and 2 assists at the time of writing. Sam Szmodics, with 4 scores, is also worth mentioning. However, Ipswich Town generally struggles with finishing, only having one solid option at the very front (Liam Delap). Protecting the lead also has been a challenge, yet their defence has been solid in some games.

Manchester City in 2024/25 Premier League

Before the season, the odds were definitely in the 4-time defending champions’ favour. However, a season-ending injury to arguably the team’s most important player, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and a great dip in form from pivotal superstar Kyle Walker and an ageing Kevin De Bruyne has exposed Pep Guardiola’s team to situations they aren’t accustomed to.

Even though the Spanish coach acknowledges these issues in public, most of their squad aren’t familiar with the concept of competing so hard for every point. Going to a match against mid-table teams and getting into a dogfight for every ball seemed to knock the wind out of their sails.

For the first time in a while, Manchester City lost 3 games in a row and 4 out of 7 in one stretch. That terrible stretch seemed to have passed, and perennial champions weathered the storm. Yet, the damage has been done. Their title hopes hang on a thread. All the while, their Champions League situation is also getting more dire by the minute.

This year, Erling Haaland has still provided some phenomenal outings. Savinho has been solid with Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden has also shown some flashes of excellence. If they wish to continue fighting for the Premier League title, this is a must-win game!
