Ever since 1971-72, there has been a main domestic List A limited overs cricket competition in the land of Kiwis – New Zealand. Since 2011-12, it is called “The Ford Trophy” and is followed by thousands of fans from New Zealand, Oceania and other parts of the world. The competition is very high-level with only 6 teams competing.
We will look at the current situation for the 2024-25 season, introduce the long-term odds and glance at the glorious history of the Ford Trophy.

After 5 rounds, it seems Central and Northern Districts are out of the mix. Otago and Wellington will definitely need to grab every available point to stand at the coveted 3rd spot in the standings.
And at the top – Auckland, along with the defending champs, Canterbury. These squads are in excellent shape as of late. They are a bit ahead in both points and quality of play.

Overview of the Ford Trophy (History, Format, Dates)
As the top domestic one-day cricket competition in New Zealand, ever since the first edition in 1971–72, the tournament has been gaining traction and popularity.
Right now, the competition features six regional teams: Auckland, Canterbury, Central Districts, Northern Districts, Otago, and Wellington.
- Grand Final is scheduled for 2nd of March, 2025.
- The winner in 2023-24 was Canterbury.
- Over the last 10 years, there have been 4 different winners.
Over the decades, the Ford Trophy has been an excellent ground for emerging talents to get noticed internationally, not just domestically. As of 2024-25, it’s hard to imagine cricket in New Zealand without the Ford Trophy.
The tournament starts with a round-robin format. Then we move on to preliminary (elimination) finals and the final.
- Each team plays a total of 5 matches
- You get 4 points for a win, 0 for a loss, 2 for a tie, abandonment or no result
- A bonus point can be awarded for a run rate reaching 1.25x compared to their opponents
- Teams that finish 4th – 6th do not advance
- 2nd and 3rd places will face off in the Elimination Final
- The first place after the round-robin automatically goes to the Grand Final
