Wimbledon isn’t just the oldest Grand Slam tournament. It’s also one of the most prestigious sporting events of the year, anchored firmly in the June-July stretch of the tennis calendar. Also called ‘The Championships’ will start June 30 and are set to culminate on July 13. Wimbledon always captivates the attention of sports fans from all over the world.
Starting with the qualifying rounds at Roehampton (June 23-26), the main tournament is set to feature draws of 128 best Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ singles with 64 doubles in various categories, too. It’s the third Grand Slam event of the year and the only one played on meticulously maintained grass courts. The court type always offers up lightning-fast serves and high-paced action from the first to the last game. In 2024, Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova won. Let’s see their chances of repeating — and explore the Wimbledon betting odds on them and other top contenders heading into 2025!
Top Contenders
The 138th edition of Wimbledon Championships has a record prize purse of £53,550,000, with Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles winners set to cash £3,000,000 (11.11 % more than last year). In addition, there are 2,000 rating points for the winner.
Gentlemen’s Singles
As always, there is the ‘The Big 3’ of the current tennis world: Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, considered to be the outright favourites everywhere they participate.
Alcaraz is the defending champ and is coming into Wimbledon scorching hot, outlasting Jannik Sinner in the legendary Roland Garros final that lasted over 5 hours. On grass, the Spaniard currently holds a 15-match winning streak and books consider him the biggest favourite. One more noteworthy thing going for Alcaraz is his 89 % win-loss percentage on the grass in the Open Era – the highest ever recorded.
After the temporary disqualification and a heartbreak loss to Alcaraz in the French Open, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is the No. 1 contender to take home the ultimate prize. However, his form isn’t the best, as he lost a surprise match against Alexander Bublik in Halle’s Round of 16 on June 19.
Finally, when the match is played on grass, you can never count out Novak Djokovic. The 38-year-old may have lost a step since his younger days, but is still a nearly unbeatable force when he’s on his game. He also has 7 Wimbledon titles to his name. The question surrounding the Serbian’s chances revolves around his stamina and durability.
Besides the previously mentioned players, some dark horse picks include hometown favourite Jack Draper (No. 6), perennial contender Alexander Zverev (World No. 3), Taylor Fritz (World No. 4) and current rising star Holger Rune (No. 9) from Denmark.
Ladies’ Singles
Last year’s Ladies’ Singles tournament was exhilarating as only the #31 ranked athlete, Barbora Krejcikova, rose to the top of the pile.
This year, the competition is expected to be much tighter, with all the heavy hitters ready and able to show excellent form.
World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will be looking to avenge her French Open Final loss to Coco Gauff and 2024 Wimbledon withdrawal. The 27-year-old only has 2 Semi-Final appearances to her name so far. However, you can never pass over a player of her calibre. While grass courts aren’t necessarily her strong suit, maybe it’s high time she adds another title to her impressive tally.
Iga Swiatek is another strong contender. Facing a Grand Slam title drought since Roland Garros 2024, the Polish player is in no way on the decline. She managed to claw her way to semi-finals in the two previous Grand Slams. This could point to a breakthrough in the books. Once again, just as Sabalenka, the 4x French Open winner Swiatek hasn’t had the best success on grass, but fortunes in Wimbledon can change quickly.
The young American Coco Gauff is the most dangerous opponent in Ladies’ tennis right now. After an upset triumph in the Roland Garros final, the 21-year-old will seek to continue her ascent to the tennis throne in London. Her past results in Wimbledon also aren’t great, but with recent results, it’s obvious why she’s on the favourite list.
Barbora Krejcikova will have a hard time defending her title, especially when returning from injury. However, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Czech athlete, as her title defence could be one for the history books!
Dark Horses to Watch
We’ve seen it before. Especially on the women’s side, all favourites come to Wimbledon with high expectations, but a complete dark horse manages to run away with the win.
On the Women’s Side
- 2017– Garbine Muguruza (Rank 14)
- 2018 – Angelique Kerber (Rank 11)
- 2019 – Simona Halep (Rank 7)
- 2022 – Elena Rybakina (Rank 17)
- 2023 – Marketa Vondrousova (Not Ranked in Top Seeds)
- 2024 – Barbora Krejcikova (Rank 31)
On the Men’s Side
Even though there have only been 5 different Gentlemen’s winners since 2003, the list of finalists has been very diverse. We’ve had complete dark horses like Kevin Anderson reach the final in 2018, and an unranked Nick Kyrgios do the same in 2022.
Dark Horses of Wimbledon 2025
Based on recent performances and overall results on grass, several up-and-comers are seemingly poised for an upset or two. Both tennis experts and fans are eagerly keeping an eye on some Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s performers to make some noise.
Wimbledon 2025 | Men’s Dark Horses
Jack Draper has had good fortunes recently and will also benefit from home support. Current World #6 made it to the Round of 16 of both previous Grand Slams of 2025. Recent performances indicate he might be gunning for more.
Current World #7 and a semifinalist last year, Italian Lorenzo Musetti could also surprise many. If Roland Garros form were to carry over, the 23-year-old is more than capable of making a deep run.
If healthy, American Taylor Fritz could be a factor, although 2025 Slams haven’t been all that impressive for him.
Alex de Minaur, often underrated, as well as the veteran Alexander Zverev, are two players that can always go back and forth with the best of them.
Wimbledon 2025 | Women’s Dark Horses
Madison Keys shocked the tennis world when she took down Aryna Sabalenka in the Australian Open of 2025. The 30-year-old American is still in her prime and could make a deep run in the tournament.
As mentioned before, with so many different and often unexpected Wimbledon Ladies’ winners in recent years, you can never count anyone out beforehand. Definitely keep your sights locked on Jasmine Paolini, Qinwen Zheng, Emma Navarro, Paula Badosa and Elena Rybakina, too.
British players Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu will also bring home-court advantage and solid grass records to the stage.
Betting Odds
For both smaller and Grand Slam major tournaments, the most popular betting markets are very similar. 7bet UK players mostly stake wagers on outright tournament winner, match winner, set results, over/under options and handicap betting markets.
In sports books, the odds reflect the forecasted probability of an outcome. Longer odds imply a smaller likelihood, while shorter odds indicate a favourite.
7bet UK users will see the odds displayed in a fractional format by default (e.g. 5/1). It’s the standard for most UK bookmakers. For example, 5/1 means you win £5 for every £1, plus your original stake back. If decimal or moneyline (American) odds formats are more convenient, you can easily change them. Odds help bettors evaluate risks and calculate potential returns. Keep in mind that Wimbledon odds can change almost daily, depending on player form, injury and other reports.
