Liverpool: Analysis and Team Preview

Liverpool FC has started the 2024-25 season with new manager Arne Slot. Former manager Jürgen Klopp quit last season citing that he “simply didn’t have the energy to carry on.” The 57-year-old had been with the club for nine seasons.

Arne Slot previously managed Cambuur, AZ Alkmaar, and Feyenoord. Slot is known for high-intensity attacking style of play. His teams play with a high defensive line and look to get the ball in the opposition corner quickly. That’s exactly what Liverpool has been doing this season. They’ve taken 169 shots so far and scored 31 goals. More than that, their defense has been excellent as they’ve conceded only 13 goals (the lowest this season) and blocked 69 shots.

They have reached EFL Cup semi-finals and are going strong in the UEFA Champions League. However, there are some testing injuries on the squad. Centre back Ibrahima Konaté is suffering from a knee injury and has been ruled out till early January 2025. Right back Conor Bradley is suffering from a hamstring injury and is expected to miss out entire December. Left back Andy Robertson is serving a one-match ban, and will be missing from the game against Spurs on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur: Analysis and Team Preview

Much like the Reds, the Spurs too have made it to the semifinals of the EFL Cup (also known as the Carabao Cup).

However, they’ve been inconsistent in the Premier League. Over two weeks in early December, they went five games without a win (ending the games in either a draw or loss). They finally broke the pattern with a 5–0 win over Southampton on 16th December.

Their manager Ange Postecoglou, who joined the squad in June 2023, told Sky Sports that a top-4 finish for the Spurs is unlikely. “I don’t see fourth as the prize. I don’t want to finish fourth if we haven’t grown as a team.” Spurs had finished fifth last season.

Still, the team has made great progress under Postecoglou. They are now creating more opportunities to strike and imposing themselves in every game.

The attacking unit, led by forwards Son Heung-min (5 goals, 6 assists), and Brennan Johnson (6 goals, 1 assist) has been particularly effective. Midfielders like James Maddison (7 goals, 4 assists) and Kulusevski (4 goals, 3 assists) have maintained pressure on opponents. Defenders Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Van de Van, and Cristian Romero will be missing from Sunday’s match due to injuries. Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been suspended till round 17.
