La Liga’s 2024/25 season is underway, and the 20 participating clubs have already played 6 to 7 matches each. According to the current standings (accurate to the time of publishing), Barcelona leads with 18 points, while Real Madrid is at 14 points and Atlético Madrid is a close third at 13 points.
They face each other on Sunday, 29 September. Will the Los Blancos be able to repeat the success of last season? Or will the Los Colchoneros aka Los Rojiblancos overtake them? Below, we give you team previews, head-to-head stats, and odds for the La Liga – Madrido Atlético vs Real Madrid match.
Real Madrid: Analysis and Team Preview
Los Blancos have strengthened their ranks with the entry of forward Kylian Mbappé. The French football captain has left PSG, his Ligue 1 club, to sign a five-year contract with Real Madrid. Their attack now has a strong lineup of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Mbappé, and Jude Bellingham, along with two new additions – Brazilian youngster Endrick Felipe, and German centre forward Joselu.
In the defense, there has been one major change. Ex-captain Nacho Fernández bid an emotional farewell after spending 23 years with the club. He has signed a two-year contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah. However, Éder Militão has returned to fitness after a ligament tear and is set to step into the heart of defense alongside Antonio Rüdiger and Jesus Vallejo, who has returned from his loan at Granada.
Defender David Alaba is still grappling with a knee injury and will not return until 2025. Real Madrid was in talks with French footballer Lenny Yoro, to fill the defence gap. However, Yoro has joined Manchester United and is currently playing in the English Premier League.
Midfielder Toni Kroos has announced his retirement, which means left-back Eduardo Camavinga and captain Luka Modrić will be handling the attackers from Los Rojiblancos.
Atlético Madrid: Analysis and Team Preview
Atlético Madrid have spent €200m (£167m) to spruce up their squad. Some of the new additions include Argentinian footballer Julian Alvarez, who has arrived from Manchester City. The striker has already scored his first goal against Valencia.
English midfielder Conor Gallagher has arrived from Chelsea. Centre-back Robin Le Normand has left Real Sociedad to move to Atleti. He was a part of the Spanish football team that won the Euro 2024.
Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth has joined Atleti as well. He has transferred from another La Liga club, Villarreal, where he scored 23 goals last season. More additions include Argentine goalkeeper Juan Musso who arrives on loan from Atalanta and French defender Clement Lenglet who is on a loan from Barcelona.
No doubt, there’s great enthusiasm among Atleti supporters as the club is fuelled by big arrivals.
The squad overhaul has also seen some key exits. Arthur Vermeeren, Santiago Mourino, and Samu Omorodion are out the door. Vermeeren had a short stint at Atleti as he didn’t click with manager Diego Simeone, and is now transferring to RB Leipzig. Meanwhile, Uruguayan defender Mourino has made a permanent exit and moved to Alaves. While the exits of these young players don’t significantly impact the lineup, they do age the squad profile.
