When in 1896 powers that be decided to revive the ancient Greek tradition of conducting a sport tournament for the best athletes out there, could they imagine that their initiative would catch on so well?
Since their very first edition, the Modern Olympic Games never failed to create an unforgettable event for the sport professionals and sport fans alike. The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics were no exception. Since 27 July, every day surprised us with yet another interesting moment, outstanding achievement, or proud cheering.
Even though the 2024 Olympics still have several days to conclude its run, a lot of athletes have finished their programme, so results for many sports are already out. One such sport we would like to take a look at today is gymnastics.
Gymnastics Olympics 2024: What You Need To Know
Even back in 1896 gymnastics were so popular that the organizers of the first Olympic Games entered it into the programme along with athletics, cycling, fencing, swimming, shooting, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling. Since then, gymnastics have been a core sport that was included in every edition of the Summer Olympics, even though initially the disciplines might have looked differently.
While there are a whole number of disciplines united under the gymnastics umbrella, only some of them are officially recognized by the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG), the governing body of the sport. Out of those, only three are admitted to the Summer Olympic Games, namely: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampolining.
The same disciplines were entered into the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Artistic gymnastics and trampolining were scheduled between 27 July and 5 August, with 2 August specifically allocated for the trampoline tournament. All events took place at the Bercy Arena. Rhythmic gymnastics are set to take place a little later down the line, from 8 to 10 August. The venue will also be different. This time athletes will move to Porte de La Chapelle Arena, often referred to simply as the Adidas Arena.
This year, the International Olympic Committee allocated a total of 318 berths to athletes in all three disciplines. 192 spots went to artistic gymnastics, 94 to rhythmic gymnastics, and 32 to trampolining.

How Gymnastics Are Evaluated
In gymnastics, all three disciplines have a different system of evaluation. For example, in trampolining only individual results are taken into account, with no team score. In rhythmic gymnastics, athletes are given points both for individual and group performances, however, based on the rules established by the International Federation of Gymnastics, only women can compete in the rhythmic.
Artistic gymnastics has the most elaborate evaluation system. With both genders allowed into the competition, they get an individual and a team all-around score, but also performance on each apparatus is evaluated separately and is eligible for a medal.
Gymnastics Olympics 2024 Winners
Competition in rhythmic gymnastics is just rolling in, but artistic gymnastics and trampolining have finished their roll at this year’s Olympic Games. In artistic gymnastics, men and women were evaluated for their team and individual all-around performances as well as gender eligible apparatus performances.
