Gymnastics Olympics 2024: Schedule, Teams Preview, and Previous Winners

Gymnastics has been a staple of the Summer Olympics since its inception at the 1896 Games in Athens. Initially, only men participated in the events for 32 years. It wasn’t until the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam that women were permitted to compete in artistic gymnastics. Rhythmic gymnastics made its debut at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, while trampoline events were introduced at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

A total of 54 nations will participate in gymnastics this year. China is miles ahead of these countries in terms of number of gymnasts. A total of 20 Chinese gymnasts will participate in the Paris Olympics 2024.

China also had a outing at the Tokyo Olympics and finished first with 11 medals, four of which were Gold. Russian Olympic Committee athletes finished second with two gold medals and a total of 10 medals.

Artistic Gymnastics Olympics 2024: Teams Preview and 2020 Winners

The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2022 was the qualification event for the Paris Olympics 2024. The United States won three gold medals and topped the medal tally, finishing with eight medals total. China came second with three gold medals, while Japan finished in third place with two wins.

Simon Biles will be back in action at the Gymnastics Olympics 2024. This will be her third appearance at the Olympic Games, having already secured seven Olympic medals, four of which were gold, at the Rio 2016 Games.

Three years ago at the Tokyo 2020 Games, the 23-time world champion withdrew from the women’s team final and four subsequent individual finals to prioritize her mental health due to experiencing the ‘twisties,’ a condition where a gymnast’s body and mind lose synchronization.

Biles will guide a slightly depleted United States team that faced setbacks just before the Games, due to injuries to two-time World team champions Shilese Jones and Skye Blakely.

The competition for medals will be intense, as Brazil, Italy, France, and the People’s Republic are fielding strong teams in Paris.

The men’s competition at Paris 2024 is anticipated to be a fierce battle between gymnastics Japan and China. Japan’s most recent Olympic team championship was at Rio 2016, while China emerged victorious at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. The United States, Ukraine, and Great Britain also have a strong lineup.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic all-around and horizontal bar champion Hashimoto Daiki (Japan), who is the two-time reigning world champion, will aim to defend his title in Paris. However, he will face a tough challenge from the 2021 world champion, Zhang Boheng (China). Other notable contenders at the Gymnastics Olympics 2024 include Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun, Americans Brody Malone and Fred Richard, and Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Olympics 2024: Teams Preview and 2020 Winners

Rhythmic gymnastics is a women-only sport that emphasizes expression through movement and music. The sport was officially recognized by the International Gymnastics Federation in 1961.

The Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships 2022 served as the qualification tournament for the Paris Olympics 2024. Italy, Bulgaria, and Germany finished in the first three places in the tournament.

Italy’s Sofia Raffaeli won the all-around title and won four gold medals. Across all four apparatus, Raffaeli scored a total of 133.250, securing the gold medal. Darja Varfolomeev from Germany earned the silver with a score of 132.450, and Stiliana Nikolova from Bulgaria claimed the bronze with a score of 128.800.

In the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Bulgaria, Russian Olympic Committee athletes, and Italy won the gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively. Linoy Ashram of Israel won the gold medal in the individual all-around competition. Dina Averina (Russi) and Alina Harnasko (Belarus) won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Trampoline Gymnastics Olympics 2024: Teams Preview and 2020 Winners

Trampoline gymnastics first appeared in the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, and China has been a dominant force in the sport ever since, claiming a total of 14 out of the 36 medals available in both the men’s and women’s events.

Ivan Litvinovich, the sole Belarusian gold medalist in Tokyo, is set to participate in the Paris Olympics as an Individual Neutral Athlete. He is the current reigning champion and was selected among the 14 athletes granted neutral status by the International Gymnastics Federation. Athletes and officials from Belarus and Russia must meet specific criteria to be eligible for neutral status.

Bryony Page (Great Britain), Zhu Xueying (China), Yan Langyu (China), and Wang Zisai (China) are enjoying a good season and their recent performances have been stellar.

Page won a silver medal in Rio and a bronze in Tokyo. Since the last Olympics, she has achieved success by winning two world championships, notably defeating Olympic gold medalist Zhu Xueying in 2023.

Xueying, the current world champion, started her trampoline gymnastics career at the age of 10. Following her victory in the youth event in 2014, she achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first trampoline gymnast to secure a gold medal at both the Olympics and Youth Olympic Games. She will strive to emulate Canada’s Rosie MacLennan as one of the few trampolinists to successfully defend an Olympic title.

Langyu won gold medals at the World Championship in 2021 and 2023. Zisai won the silver medal at the World Championship last year.
