The gruelling race has kicked off and completed the first three stages with sweat and triumph underneath the hot Portuguese skies. Here’s a quick recap of stages 1, 2 and 3.

Stage 1: Brandon McNulty from the UAE Team Emirates, displayed a stroke of brilliance and clinched the first red jersey, leading the 2024 race. His name also went down in history as he won the fastest time trial ever seen in the Spanish Grand Tour in a time of 12:35. It was a close competition as Lidl-Trek’s Mathias Vacek and Belgium’s Wout van Aert were just two and three seconds slower, respectively.

Stage 2: Alpecin-Deceuninck’s Kaden Groves prevailed in a passion-packed finale of the second stage. Ourém saw the Australian sprint his way past Visma-Lease a Bike’s Wout Van Aert who held the red leader’s jersey, La Roja, after claiming the bonus seconds. While Groves nailed his fifth stage win, Van Aert debuted in this race and took his fifth Grand Tour leader jersey after Tour de France in 2022.

Stage 3: The unstoppable Van Aert triumphed in the third stage, marking an electrifying feat in his Grand Tour career as he conquered his tenth stage win. Castelo Branco also saw Kaden Groves come in second while the third place was grabbed by Euskaltel-Euskadi’s Jon Aberasturi, in the bunch finish.

The fourth stage is set to begin from the fierce Spanish terrain that will bring forth new challenges to the contenders. It has drawn much curiosity as to whether cycling fans will see nail-biting stage wins or a straight-out victor.
