2024 Boxing Olympics: Latest Standings and Highlights

The Boxing event at the Paris 2024 Olympics started on July 27 and will run till August 10. Preliminary boxing matches are taking place at Arena Paris Nord in Villepinte, while the medal rounds, including the semifinals and finals, will be held at Stade Roland Garros.

The boxing program for the Paris 2024 Olympics maintained the same number of weight categories as in the last three editions, totaling thirteen (seven for men and six for women).

The seven men’s weight classes are 51 kg, 57 kg, 63.5 kg, 71 kg, 80 kg, 92 kg, and +92 kg. The six women’s weight classes are 50 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 66 kg, and 75 kg.

Key Highlights

As of August 1, a total of four quarter-final matches have been played. The round of 16 matches of the women’s 57 kg event is scheduled for August 2. Let’s look at some of the key highlights of each weight category in men’s and women’s events.

Men’s Categories

In the men’s 51kg, Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov has qualified for the quarter-finals. He won the bronze medal in Tokyo after losing the semi-final bout against Galal Yafai of Great Britain. He will be up against Hasanboy Dusmatov, the 2023 World Champion.

In the men’s 57kg event, José Quiles of Spain has turned the table. The 26-year-old boxer failed to make it past the preliminary round in Tokyo 2020 and lost against Ireland’s Kurt Walker by 5-0. José has qualified for the quarter-finals this time and will face Uzbekistan’s Abdumalik Khalokov.

The four semi-finalists of the men’s 63.5 kg have been decided. Cuba has won three gold medals in this event since 2000. Erislandy Álvarez is representing Cuba this year in this event and is one of the four semi-finalists. The other three are Georgia’s Lasha Guruli, France’s Sofiane Oumiha, and Canada’s Wyatt Sanford.

Kazakhstan has won four gold medals since the 2004 Olympic Games in the men’s 71 kg event. However, Ablaikhan Zhussupov of Kazakhstan lost in the second round and failed to make it five in a row. This year, Aslanbek Shymbergenov represented Kazakhstan at the Olympics. He lost the round of 32 match against Jordan’s Zeyad Ishaish.

In the men’s 80 kg event, Cuban boxer Arlen López is one of the eight boxers who have made it to the quarter-finals. López won the gold medal in Tokyo after defeating Benjamin Whittaker of Great Britain by 4-1.

Julio César La Cruz of Cuba, who won the gold medal in the men’s 92 kg event in Tokyo crashed out in round of 16. The four semi-finalists in this event are Enmanuel Reyes (Spain), Loren Alfonso (Azerbaijan), Lazizbek Mullojonov (Uzbekistan), and Davlat Boltaev (Tajikistan).

Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan won the gold medal in the men’s +92 kg event in Tokyo. He made his Olympics debut in 2016 and lost the quarter-final match to the eventual silver medalist Joe Joyce. Jalolov has qualified for the quarter-final once again in Paris.

Women’s Categories

Turkey’s Buse Naz Çakıroğlu won the silver medal in Tokyo in the women’s 50kg event. She has qualified for the quarter-finals in Paris in the same event.

Chang Yuan, Pang Chol-mi, Hatice Akbas, and Im Ae-ji are the four semi-finalists in the women’s 54kg event in Paris. Im Ae-ji, the South Korean boxer qualified for the round of 16 in Tokyo in the featherweight category and lost the same against Australia’s Skye Nicolson by 4-1.

In the women’s 57kg event, Nesthy Petecio has qualified for the quarter-finals. Petecio, the Filipina boxer won the silver medal in the featherweight category in Tokyo. She lost the final against Sena Irie of Japan by 5-0. Irma Testa of Italy, the bronze medalist from Tokyo was eliminated in the round of 32 this year.

Kellie Harrington and Beatriz Ferreira, the finalists in the lightweight event in Tokyo will meet once again in Paris. They will face each other in the semi-final match this year. Harrington defeated Ferreira by 5-0 in the final in Tokyo to win the gold medal. Ferreira had to settle for the silver medal. The other two semi-finalists in this event are China’s Yang Wenlu and Taiwan’s Wu Shih-yi.

In the women’s 66kg event, the eight quarter-finalists have been decided. Busenaz Sürmeneli is one of these quarter-finalists. The Turkish boxer won the gold medal in Tokyo in 2020 after defeating China’s Gu Hong by 3-0.

In the 75kg event, Li Qian won the silver medal in Tokyo after losing the final against Great Britain’s Lauren Price by 5-0. She has qualified for the quarter-finals in Paris. Qian will take on India’s Lovlina Borgohain. Lovlina won a bronze medal in the welterweight division in Tokyo. Khadija El-Mardi, the Moroccan boxer who withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics has also made it to the quarter-finals.
