Ron Prichard&#8217;s design opened in 1988, and a couple of the original grain silos are still standing on the property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>par 70 and roughly 7,288 yards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is not a long course by modern Tour standards. There are only two par 5s on the card, which strips out the easy birdies and puts the whole examination on par-4 scoring and iron play. Length off the tee is close to irrelevant here. Position is everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lakes, ponds and streams are in play on 11 of the 18 holes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and over recent seasons Southwind has produced more balls in the water than any other course on the PGA Tour by a comfortable margin. Add thick Bermuda rough and small, firm Bermuda greens, and a slightly loose tee shot turns into a dropped shot very quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holes to watch:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The par-3 11th<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a short iron to a small island green, often compared to a scaled-down version of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The par-3 14th<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the hole that consistently plays hardest all week. Mid-August in Memphis regularly means temperatures in the mid to high 30s Celsius with heavy humidity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Field &amp; Featured Players<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The field is set by the FedExCup standings after the Wyndham Championship, so there are no invitations and no qualifying. You either played well enough over eight months, or you watch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Defending Champion<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Justin Rose returns to Memphis as defending champion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and his win last year was one of the better Sunday afternoons of 2025. He was three behind Tommy Fleetwood with five holes left, birdied four in a row, closed with a 67 to tie J.J. Spaun, and then birdied the third playoff hole to win. At 45 years and 11 days old he became the Tour&#8217;s oldest winner since 2021, and the win took him back into the world&#8217;s top 10 for the first time since 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Leading the FedExCup Standings<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Scottie Scheffler begins the playoffs at No. 1 in the FedExCup standings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having locked up the top seed before the regular season even finished. Matt Fitzpatrick and Chris Gotterup arrive with three wins apiece this season, while Cameron Young and Wyndham Clark have two each.
