The Newmarket Racecourse was first founded in 1636, but the history of horse racing in Newmarket goes as far back in time as the 16th century. Also, in 1671, it was here that King Charles II became the only reigning monarch in British history to ride a winning horse.<\/span><\/p>\n

As it is a flat racecourse, <\/span>Newmarket races run from April to October. Newmarket is only slightly behind Ascot Racecourse, hosting 9 Group 1 out of Britain\u2019s 36 flat races during the season.<\/p>\n

Newmarket is often called the headquarters of British horseracing. It hosts the biggest number of the country\u2019s training yards as well as various horse racing organisations. Two out of Britain\u2019s five Classic Races also take place in Newmarket, namely the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas.<\/p>\n
